DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union is accusing General Motors of violating a national contract by using temporary workers instead of employing full-timers who were laid off from its factories.
The union filed a federal lawsuit in Cleveland alleging that GM has temporary workers at its pickup truck plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The lawsuit says GM has about 1,000 workers on layoff from several factories who should be working at the plant.

South Bend Democrat resigns from Legislature
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A South Bend lawmaker is resigning from the Indiana House to take a job with a labor union.
Democratic Rep. Joe Taylor said in a statement Monday that he is stepping down immediately to take a position with the United Auto Workers International Union. He was first elected in 2016.
Taylor said his new job will take his "full attention" and may require him to move out of the state.

Columbia postdoctoral researchers vote to unionize
NEW YORK (AP) — Some 2,000 postdoctoral researchers and associate research scientists at Columbia University have voted for representation by the United Auto Workers.
The union announced the vote by the postdocs Thursday and urged the Ivy League University "to move swiftly toward bargaining."
The move comes months after the university said it would not bargain with the graduate students who voted for union representation in 2016.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — The United Auto Workers Local 599 building has stood on East Leith Street on Flint's north end for more than 60 years.
Now, it's getting a new life as a nightclub and event center, the Flint Journal reported.
