Alabama, Auburn named among nation’s top research schools
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama and Auburn University have both been classified as top doctoral research institutions nationally.
The Carnegie Foundation has recognized the schools with its "Very High Research Activity" status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
In addition, the University of Alabama holds the Carnegie designation as a Community Engaged Institution.
UAB license plate gets redesign
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama at Birmingham license plates have been redesigned.
The Alabama Department of Revenue tells Al.com the newly designed specialty plate will be available for issuance in 2019. A shipment of plates has been ordered for each licensing office base on the number of current registrations. More than 3,000 UAB license plates are currently on Alabama vehicles.
Energen donating art collection to UAB

Tuscaloosa approves new 7-story housing project near stadium
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — A new multi-unit housing project near the University of Alabama campus is one step closer to reality.
The city council recently approved its construction with a 5-1 vote, The Tuscaloosa News reported.
Uncommon Tuscaloosa is projected to be a seven-story development about a block-and-a-half west of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The structure is expected to contain 296 bedrooms in 132 units.
No construction timeline was announced for the estimated $25 million to $30 million project.

Alabama to construct new business building
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama plans to construct another new academic building in Tuscaloosa.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A new study found that Alabama children attending private schools on a taxpayer-backed scholarship program are not showing significant improvement on standardized tests scores.
Touted as a way to help low-income students escape schools with chronically low test scores, the Alabama Accountability Act provides scholarships and tax credits for students to transfer to private schools.
2 serious injuries when bus plunges down an Alabama hill
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama state troopers say several passengers were injured when a University of Alabama-Birmingham bus plunged down a hill and struck a tree.
Corporal Mark A. Stone said Friday the bus crashed near Arley, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Birmingham.
UAB spokesman Tyler Greer said the bus was carrying 26 pediatric residents from UAB hospital. The residents were returning from a retreat.
Mississippi students avoid jail in Alabama football burglary

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Police say a University of Alabama student pulled down a woman's pants while she was jogging near the campus and later broke into a nearby home and stole women's underwear.
Tuscaloosa police Capt. Brad Mason tells news outlets the woman struggled with the man Monday and was able to escape.
Mason says another woman chased the man from her home Tuesday after he took underwear. Police soon after arrested 19-year-old John Everett Threadgill.

Four Mississippi State University students are accused of breaking into the University of Alabama's athletic facility and stealing memorabilia.
The break-in happened during the pre-dawn hours of April 4, six days before Alabama's national championship football team met with President Donald Trump at the White House, authorities said.
The four managed to get inside the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility and stole "various items of memorabilia," court records state.
Mississippi State students charged with stealing from Alabama athletic facility
Four Mississippi State students have been charged with felony third-degree burglary for breaking into University of Alabama's athletic facility and stealing memorabilia.
On April 4, the students broke into the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility in Tuscaloosa before dawn when no one was inside, The Associated Press reported. Court records say the students stole "various items of memorabilia."
The students were identified using footage of the incident captured by security video.

A man pulled out a gun and shot two people Wednesday night inside UAB Highlands, which is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The man then killed himself with a shot to the head, authorities said.
