A memo sent to the UVM community on Monday, said that Suresh Garimella, a Purdue vice president, is the sole finalist for the job that will become vacant when current UVM President Thomas Sullivan leaves the post later this year to finish a book.
Police: Cold likely contributed to death of college student
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Burlington Police Department says sub-zero temperatures and inadequate clothing likely contributed to the death of a 19-year-old University of Vermont student found lying in a parking lot.
Police say the young man, whose name has not been released, was found just before 11 a.m. Saturday behind a Burlington business.
Emergency crews attempted to revive the student but were unsuccessful.

Man seriously injured in fall while ice climbing
CAMBRIDGE, Vt. (AP) — Police say a man has been seriously injured in a fall while ice climbing in Vermont.
State Police say 39-year-old Stephen Charest, of Jericho, was climbing in Cambridge near Smugglers' Notch Thursday when he fell 40 feet (12 meters).
Charest was transported by helicopter to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment.
UVM gets $15M gift for athletic facility upgrade
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The University of Vermont is naming a new event center after a couple who donated $15 million to help fund the project that will include upgraded athletic facilities and host a variety of academic, social, cultural, and entertainment programming.
The university announced the gift from Rich and Deb Tarrant prior to the start of a Tuesday men's basketball game against St. Bonaventure.
The new facility will be known as the "Tarrant Event Center."

Burlington police say the 20-year-old male student was walking home in the city early Sept. 30 when he was harassed and struck in the head by a group of men.
Police say the student fell to the ground, and one man kicked him while he was down. Several items were stolen from the student.
UVM receives $12.3 million to study infectious diseases
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The University of Vermont has received a $12.3 million federal grant to open a new center to study infectious diseases.
The university announced Thursday the Translational Global Infectious Disease Research Center will focus on decreasing infectious disease rates, especially in low-income countries.
The program will target diseases such as HIV, influenza, tuberculosis and Ebola, and it will rely on a partnership between engineers and biologists.

Old U of Vermont library renovated, rejoins campus community
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The University of Vermont's 19th Century library building has been reopened after an $11.4 million renovation and it will now serve as home to a number of the school's departments.
The Billings Library, on the university quad, was built in 1885 and served as the school's library until 1961.
The building, still called the Billings Library, served as a student center from 1963 until 2007 when UVM opened a new student center.
Union nurses ratify contract with Burlington hospital

The contract approved Thursday includes a 16-percent pay increase over three years. Nurses were seeking a 22 percent raise during negotiations that began in March.
