Steelers tight ends McDonald, Grimble dealing with injuries
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will have their depth at tight end tested with Vance McDonald and Xavier Grimble both dealing with injuries.

DENVER (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers can unnerve plenty of defenses with the NFL's best pair of pass catchers and the league's top tight end tandem.
"We've had a tough game every week," Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said. "We haven't had any easy games. So, this is just another top offense that we get to see, another great challenge and we're up for it."
Steelers hope win over Bucs sign of things to come
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Vance McDonald insists he wasn't sending some sort of message when the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end extended his right arm toward Tampa Bay's Chris Conte and jammed the Buccaneers defensive back into the turf on Monday night.
Finally healthy, Steelers TE McDonald ready to make impact
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Vance McDonald arrived in Pittsburgh on the eve of the 2017 regular season, far too late to have any say in his locker assignment.
And the tight end hardly complained about being placed at the end of a long row of offensive linemen.
Still, he made a request going into 2018. He wanted to move. More specifically, he wanted to move to a locker right next to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Cornerback Joe Haden a full participant at Steelers practice Thursday
Steelers cornerback Joe Haden was a full practice participant a day after he pledged to make his return from a broken fibula and play in Monday's game at the Houston Texans.
Guard Ramon Foster, though, did not practice as he continues to progress through the NFL's concussion protocol.
Rookie cornerback Cam Sutton, a third-round pick activated from injured reserve earlier in the week, will be active for the Steelers' game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday night at Heinz Field.
Also active is running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who was promoted from the practice squad Saturday.
Linebacker Clay Matthews out for Packers against Steelers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Green Bay will be without linebacker Clay Matthews when the Packers try to pull an upset in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.

Steelers S Mike Mitchell, TE Vance McDonald out vs. Titans
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will have new faces in the secondary against Tennessee.
Cornerback Joe Haden is out indefinitely with a fractured left leg. The team made safety Mike Mitchell inactive when his ankle didn't heal in time to face the Titans. Coty Sensabaugh will start in place of Haden. Rob Golden will fill in for Mitchell. The Steelers have the second-ranked pass defense in the NFL.
Kevin Gorman’s Take 5: Steelers set victorious tone with opening drive
1. The Steelers' opening drive was a thing of beauty as they marched 75 yards on nine plays. That six of them involved Le'Veon Bell — who had five carries for 27 yards and one catch for a 23-yard gain — set the tone for the offense.
Ben Roethlisberger completed all three of his pass attempts, including a 16-yarder to Antonio Brown for a first down and the 7-yard scoring pass to Brown for a 7-0 lead over the Bengals at 9 minutes, 25 seconds of the first quarter.
McDonald’s hustle play? Steelers are loving it
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Vance McDonald heard the dreaded "double thud" and then just started running.
The first "thud" came from Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell's right foot smacking the ball while attempting a 35-yard field goal late in the first half last Sunday in Chicago. The second thud came when Bears defensive back Sherrick McManis blocked it.

Steelers acquire tight end Vance McDonald from 49ers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin scouted Vance McDonald before the 2013 NFL draft and liked what he saw from the big tight end. Though San Francisco grabbed McDonald in the second round that spring, Tomlin kept tabs on McDonald, monitoring his progress from afar.
Vance McDonald, a Winnie native who plays tight end for the San Francisco 49ers, held a meet and greet Friday afternoon at Philpott Ford. After graduating from East Chambers High School, McDonald played college football at Rice University before being picked in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.
San Francisco tight end and Winnie native Vance McDonald will make an appearance Monday morning at the grand opening of the Brewed Awakenings food truck in Winnie.
Employee Jennifer Cosio said McDonald will make his "signature sandwich" during his 10 a.m. appearance which will become a permanent menu item named in his honor.
"We have no idea what he's making yet," Cosio said. "We'll find out when he gets to the shop."

After completing just 1-of-4 passes in three-plus quarters, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick benched vs. Bears
CHICAGO — Colin Kaepernick last Sunday became the fifth quarterback since the merger to toss three touchdowns in addition to rushing for 100 yards in a game.
Sunday, Kaepernick became Blaine Gabbert's clipboard holder for the fourth quarter after completing 1-of-4 passes for five yards in the 49ers' 26-6 defeat to the Bears.
Kaepernick showing improvement for 49ers
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers tight end Vance McDonald remembers quarterback Colin Kaepernick leading the team to the NFC championship game in 2013 with his ability to make plays all over the field.
McDonald feels as if Kaepernick is starting to regain that form and the confidence that comes with playing every week after being selected as the starter in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.
DT Dorsey, TE McDonald out for 49ers vs. Cardinals
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey and tight end Vance McDonald are among the players inactive for the San Francisco 49ers against the Arizona Cardinals.

Gabbert throws early TD before Texans rally past 49ers 24-13
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Blaine Gabbert had the stage to himself in San Francisco's quarterback competition with Colin Kaepernick nursing a sore shoulder and provided a strong finish to an uneven performance in the exhibition opener.
Gabbert overcame a shaky start to throw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Vance McDonald before the Houston Texans rallied in the second half against San Francisco's reserves to beat the 49ers 24-13 on Sunday.
Colin Kaepernick's sore shoulder kept him out of the 49ers' exhibition opener Sunday, and while he shared the sideline with new coach Chip Kelly, Blaine Gabbert did just enough to boost his case as the starting quarterback.
Gabbert overcame a familiarly drab beginning and produced a game-tying touchdown drive on his final series of the 49ers' eventual 24-13 loss to the Houston Texans at half-empty Levi's Stadium.
