Pliskova advances to 2nd round at Tianjin Open
TIANJIN, China (AP) — Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova needed six match points to beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 and advance to the second round of the Tianjin Open on Monday.
Pliskova will next face Polona Hercog, who defeated Lara Arruabarrena 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Also, Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova beat 2014 champion Alison Riske 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, fifth-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei beat Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6 (4), 7-5, and Magda Linette defeated Evgeniya Rodina 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
NUREMBERG, Germany (AP) — Sorana Cirstea rallied to defeat home favorite Andrea Petkovic 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Nuremberg Cup on Tuesday.
Petkovic was 2-0 up in the second set, but the sixth-seeded Romanian fought back and won the last four points in the tiebreaker to clinch the victory after 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Cirstea next faces American Madison Brengle, who defeated compatriot Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Top-seeded Caroline Garcia of France defeated Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-2, 6-3 in her first match at the WTA's Volvo Car Open on Tuesday.
Garcia broke Lepchenko three times in the opening set to take control in her first clay-court match of the season.
2nd-seeded Mertens advances to Hobart quarterfinals
HOBART, Australia (AP) — Defending champion Elise Mertens beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance the Hobart International quarterfinals.
Mertens came from qualifying and No. 127 in the world in the 2017 Hobart event to win the title. She'll next meet last year's runner-up Monica Niculescu or American Varvara Lepchenko for a semifinal berth.
Mertens is the only seeded player left in her half of the draw and one of just three remaining in the tournament.
Former champs Cornet, Barthel out in 1st round at Hobart
HOBART, Australia (AP) — Former champions Alize Cornet and Mona Barthel were ousted in the first round of the Hobart International on Sunday, each losing in straight sets.
Mihaela Buzarnescu beat fourth-seeded Cornet 6-2, 6-4 and Varvara Lepchenko had a 6-0, 7-6 (4) win over 2012 winner Barthel.
Cornet was hampered by an upper leg injury but said she didn't think it would be a concern for the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 15.
US Open finalists knocked out in first round at Wuhan Open
WUHAN, China (AP) — U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens and runner-up Madison Keys were knocked out of the Wuhan Open in the first round on Monday.
In their first matches since the final at Flushing Meadows, the 17th-ranked Stephens lost to Wang Qiang of China 6-2, 6-2, while the 12th-ranked Keys was beaten by fellow American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 7-6 (4).
The last time Grand Slam finalists lost their next match was after 2005 Wimbledon, where Venus Williams beat Lindsay Davenport.
Keys knocked out by Lepchenko in Wuhan
WUHAN, China (AP) — U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys was knocked out of the Wuhan Open in a first round upset Monday, losing in straight sets to 79th-ranked qualifier Varvara Lepchenko.
In her first match since her Flushing Meadows loss to fellow American Sloane Stephens, the 22-year-old Keys — ranked 12th and seeded 10th in this tournament — was beaten 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour 49 minutes by the 31-year-old Lepchenko.

Frantangelo upsets Tomic 6-2, 6-2 in BNP Paribas Open
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — American Bjorn Fratangelo upset Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Ranked 112th, Fratangelo advanced to face No. 14 Tomas Berdych.
Adrian Mannarino outlasted Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1, and Darian King topped Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 7-5.
US tennis player Lepchenko cleared after meldonium positives
LONDON (AP) — American Varvara Lepchenko tested positive four times for meldonium, according to the International Tennis Federation, which cleared her because it was determined she took the substance before its ban went into effect on Jan. 1.
The ITF announced Tuesday that Lepchenko had been provisionally suspended in March but it was later determined that she "bore no fault or negligence for the violation."
Nara upsets third-seeded Putintseva to advance at Japan Open
TOKYO (AP) — Local favorite Kurumi Nara upset third-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.
Nara secured the win when she broke Putintseva's serve in the final game of the second set and will next face Jana Cepelova of Slovakia.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Shuai Zhang of China overpowered Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-3, 6-2 to book her spot in the last eight.
