Real Madrid edges MLS All-Stars on penalties, 4-2
CHICAGO (AP) — As consolation prizes go, it wasn't much.
But it's all the MLS All-Stars have.
"I believe the league showed a good face against one of the best teams in the world," coach Veljko Paunovic said after his MLS squad lost a penalty shootout to Royal Madrid. "I'm going to repeat that over and over.
"Five years from now, I think it would be great to face Real Madrid again," he added, "and see where we are then."
Thirteen players including Toronto's Jozy Altidore and Portland's Diego Valeri have been added to Major League Soccer's All-Star team for the Aug. 2 game against Real Madrid in Chicago.
Two commissioner's picks and 11 players named by All-Star coach Veljko Paunovic were added Tuesday to the fan selections to represent the league at the game at Soldier Field.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber selected Kellyn Acosta of FC Dallas and Dom Dwyer of Sporting Kansas City.
Chicago’s Soldier Field will host MLS All-Star Game
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's Soldier Field will host this year's Major League Soccer All-Star game, the league announced Tuesday.
The match on Aug. 2 will feature the MLS All-Stars against an international team that has not been named yet. The Chicago Fire, who play at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, will host the event.
It is the first time in six years that the game will not be played at an MLS home venue. The 2010 All-Star game was played at Houston's Reliant Stadium.
