HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The family of a Montana man killed by a drunken driver has reached a settlement with one of the bars they claimed over-served the driver.
The Independent Record reports 25-year-old Samuel Tielking died in Helena in February 2017 after his car was struck head-on by 46-year-old Chester French, who also died at the scene.

A 38-year-old Lake Havasu City man was cited and released on charges of theft, when he allegedly stole $130 in cash from an auxiliary box at Havasu’s Veterans of Foreign Wars building.
Police say that George C. Hoskins, a custodian at the VFW, entered the building’s office and reached into the auxiliary box, which contains envelopes filled with cash, and took the money from inside of them.
LEOMINSTER -- Hundreds of thousands of well-wishers lined New York City streets when William LeBeau returned from the Gulf War in 1991.

Lake Havasu High school teacher earns teacher of the year honors from state VFW
Larry Olsen, a 28-year veteran of Lake Havasu Unified School District, has been honored as this year’s Arizona Veterans of Foreign Wars high school teacher of the year.
“This makes me feel appreciated, but I definitely don’t teach for awards,” Olsen said. “You also don’t teach for the money. For me, it’s about the personal satisfaction that kids are learning. That’s the reward.”
Bill would drop restrictions on who buys drinks at VFW
PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — Private clubs such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Legion would be able to sell drinks to out-of-town veterans under a bill working its way through the Michigan Legislature.
Drinks technically can be sold only to local members of the clubs, although the restriction isn't always followed. Senate Bill 662 would get rid of the limit.
Honor Guard dwindling but still faithful
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — A simple flag lay over their caskets. The playing of "Taps." A gun salute.
These are the honors a veteran can receive when he/she is laid to rest. The rituals are performed by an Honor Guard, but whether they will continue in the future is questionable.
If an active military guard is unable to perform the service, volunteers sometimes step in.
In Fayette County, since the mid-1980s those volunteers have been the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3110.
A 15-year-old Girl Scout organized the first Wreaths Across America observance at Magnolia Cemetery in Katy on Dec. 16, drawing more than 100 people under cool temperatures and cloudy skies that let loose with a little rain after the ceremony concluded.

Michigan gets its first black woman VFW post commander
SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — A Saginaw woman has become the first black woman in Michigan appointed commander of a Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Kimberly Napoleon was installed Saturday as a commander of VFW Post 9931 in Bridgeport.
The 49-year-old Army veteran served in three military operations between 1987 and 1996, including the Persian Gulf War. She was medically retired in December 1996 because of injuries she sustained in the service that earned her a Bronze Star.
This will be the first year that wreaths are placed on graves of veterans at Magnolia Cemetery in Katy as part of the national Wreaths Across America Day, said Harry Woodstrom, commander, Katy American Legion Post 164.
He identified participants as including members of Way Out West Community Girl Scouts, the Katy American Legion and its auxiliary, and Katy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 and its auxiliary.
Earl Forte, 84, had one requirement for being sworn in as an honorary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2601 on Friday afternoon.
"As long as I don't have to go back to Korea," he joked.
Forte was a 19-year-old platoon sergeant from St. Louis in a combat engineering battalion during the Korean War. On Friday, representatives from the VFW and the Fort Collins-based Healing Warriors Program presented him with a donated electric wheelchair.

The U.S. Navy has joined the search effort in the South Atlantic for the ARA San Juan, an Argentine Navy submarine that went missing on Nov. 15.

Former NYPD cop helping aging VFW post replace its kitchen
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — With Veterans Day approaching, a former New York City police officer is helping one of Long Island's many aging veterans organizations replace its kitchen.
Ex-NYPD member Sean Acosta is joining Democratic state Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino, of West Islip, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Brentwood on Thursday to announce a plan aimed at improving the region's aging VFW posts and halls.
FAIRVIEW — Trey Robison, of Boy Scouts of America Troop 502, with the help of several other people recently completed his Eagle Scout project of redoing and significantly improving the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Memorial at the Fairview Cemetery.

Rochester's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1215 has closed on an $800,000 purchase of the former Gorilla's Sports Bar / Golden Corral building to serve as its future home.
The VFW bought the 17-year-old restaurant building at 2775 43rd St. NW last week, and the state officially recorded the sale on Tuesday.
