HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — Australian Open doubles champion Zhang Shuai retired from her second-round singles against Chinese countrywoman Wang Yafan citing dizziness at the Thailand Open on Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Zhang was trailing 4-1 when she retired against Wang in hot and humid conditions.
"I'm not feeling well. I feel so tired since the Australian Open," Zhang said.
"I still felt OK in the first round (on Tuesday). But on Wednesday my body really felt bad. I'm sorry that I have to retire."
US qualifier Brady upsets 2nd seed Garcia in Thailand Open
HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — American qualifier Jennifer Brady achieved her second career top-20 win when she upset Caroline Garcia of France 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the first round of the Thailand Open on Tuesday.
Brady, ranked 117th, used aggressive and consistent groundstrokes to upset Garcia, ranked 19th, in two hours for her first win against the Frenchwoman in three attempts.
"I knew what to expect," Brady said. "From the first point of the match, I knew my intensity was up."
Muguruza wins in 1st round of Wuhan Open, Ostapenko loses
WUHAN, China (AP) — Gabrine Muguruza got off to winning start at the Wuhan Open. Jelena Ostapenko didn't.
Muguruza defeated Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-0 on Monday in the first round of the tournament, avenging a second-round loss to the Belgian at Wimbledon.
Top seed Cornet out of Guangzhou Open in 1st round
GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Top-seeded Alize Cornet lost a rain-interrupted match to Jennifer Brady 6-0, 6-3 to exit the Guangzhou Open in the first round.
Cornet, who was incorrectly admonished by a chair umpire for changing her shirt during a match at the U.S. Open, was trailing 6-0, 2-1 when play was suspended because of rain in southern China on Monday. The 2014 Guangzhou Open finalist won only two more games on Tuesday, and Brady advanced to a second-round match against Kozlova Kateryna.
LONDON (AP) — Two-time French Open semifinalist Timea Bacsinszky has pulled out of Wimbledon because of an injured lower right leg.
The All England Club said Saturday that Bacsinszky will be replaced in the field by Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia, who lost in the final round of qualifying to 2014 Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard.
Duque-Marino will face Alison Riske of the U.S. in the first round Tuesday. The winner of that match could face No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia in the second round.
Kvitova, Strycova win, Czechs lead Swiss 2-0 in Fed Cup
PRAGUE (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Barbora Strycova won the opening singles matches on Saturday to give the Czech Republic a commanding 2-0 lead over Switzerland in the Fed Cup first round.
Kvitova put the Czechs ahead after she overcame a second-set scare to beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Strycova doubled the advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Belinda Bencic to put the Czechs one win away from their 10th straight Fed Cup semifinals.
Fed Cup: Kvitova v Golubic opens for Czechs v Swiss
PRAGUE (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will face Viktorija Golubic in the opening singles when the Czech Republic plays Switzerland in the first round of the Fed Cup World Group on Saturday.
Kvitova returns to Fed Cup for the first time since recovering from injuries in a knife attack at her home in December 2016. She won in St. Petersburg, Russia, this month, beating two top-10 players.
Top seeds Rybarikova, Strycova reach Ladies Linz final
LINZ, Austria (AP) — Top-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4 at the Ladies Linz on Saturday to set up a final against Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic.
Strycova beat Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania 6-3, 7-6 (3) to advance to her first final of the season.
Rybarikova is after her fifth career title. The 28th-ranked Slovak hasn't appeared in a WTA final since 2014, and hasn't won a title since 2013 in Washington.
Belarus stuns Switzerland to reach 1st Fed Cup final
MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Belarus surprised a higher-rated Swiss team 3-2 to reach its first-ever Fed Cup final Sunday.
No. 125-ranked Aryna Sabalenka gave the Belarusians an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five match as she beat Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The Swiss then won a dead rubber.
The Belarusian victory sets up a final against the United States in November, when Belarus should have the services of former No. 1-ranked player Victoria Azarenka.
Bacsinszky strikes back for Swiss in Fed Cup semifinal
MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Timea Bacsinszky downed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to bring Switzerland level with Belarus at 1-1 in their Fed Cup semifinal on Saturday.
Bacsinszky took full advantage of 50 unforced errors from 19-year-old Sabalenka to win 6-4, 7-5.
That canceled out an upset win for Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich against Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic in the opening rubber.
MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Belarus named an unchanged team for the Fed Cup semifinals against Switzerland on Wednesday, without a single player in the top 100.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich leads a team also featuring Aryna Sabalenka, Olga Govortsova and Vera Lapko, the squad which beat the Netherlands 4-1 in the first round.
Belarus' best-known player, former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, isn't available for the April 22-23 series in Minsk. She will return to action in July after giving birth to her first child.
Cibulkova wins 3rd title in Linz, qualifies for WTA Finals
LINZ, Austria (AP) — Dominika Cibulkova won her third title of the season and seventh overall by beating Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-3, 7-5 in the Generali Ladies final on Sunday.
The triumph earned the 10th-ranked Slovak a berth at the season-ending WTA Finals for the first time. Cibulkova also won at Katowice in April and Eastbourne in June, and appeared in three more finals this year.
Top-seeded Muguruza sprains ankle, pulls out of Linz
LINZ, Austria (AP) — French Open champion Garbine Muguruza sprained her left ankle and pulled out of her quarterfinal against Viktorija Golubic at the Generali Ladies on Friday.
The top-seeded Spaniard was leading 7-5, 3-6, 4-2 when she fell behind the baseline. Sitting on her chair in tears, Muguruza had her ankle taped. She played on for two more games, which Golubic won, and then quit the match.
