BOSTON (AP) — What looked like an easy day for the Boston Celtics turned into a fight to the finish.
It's something they've got to clean up heading into the postseason.

John Collins: Favorite dunker is Hawks teammate Vince Carter
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — John Collins has a favorite dunker. Not surprisingly, it's his Atlanta teammate Vince Carter.
Collins will represent the Hawks in the dunk contest, one of the events during All-Star Saturday Night. The 3-point contest and skills competition are also on the evening docket.
Carter provides needed spark as Hawks beat Wizards 137-129
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the old man on an Atlanta squad jammed with youngsters, Vince Carter knew what challenges the longest road trip of the season would present.
Now he's the reason the Hawks are heading home on a rare high.
The 42-year-old Carter scored 16 points in 16 minutes after halftime, helping Atlanta hold off the Washington Wizards 137-129 on Monday night to complete their seven-game trip with four wins.
Vince Carter watches the good times, but is he near goodbye?
NEW YORK (AP) — Vince Carter looked up at the highlights, enjoying the view of himself back in the days when he was among the NBA's highest flyers.
He's about to turn 42, now in his 21st season, and he doesn't jump quite like the guy being shown Wednesday night on the Barclays Center overhead screens.
Young, Carter power Hawks past Cavs, 111-108
ATLANTA (AP) — There hasn't been much for Hawks forward John Collins to feel good about this season.
His team has almost no chance to make the playoffs, so Collins wants to enjoy the good times while they last.
"We're a young team with a new coaching staff," he said. "It's all about getting together as a group and figuring it out. I think we have been."
Griffin misses late FTs, Hawks beat Pistons 98-95
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons thought they had the right big guy on the line.
With 23 seconds left and trailing the Atlanta Hawks by a point, it was Blake Griffin with two free throws instead of Andre Drummond, one of the worst free-throw shooters in league history.
Griffin missed both shots, and the Hawks held on for a 98-95 victory Sunday.
"I have to be better than that," he said. "We fought back to give ourselves a chance to win the game, and I missed the shots."
Collins leads Hawks past Nuggets 106-98
ATLANTA (AP) — John Collins was most pleased that Atlanta avenged a blowout loss to Denver.
Collins scored a career-high 30 points, and Vince Carter and DeAndre' Bembry came off the bench to fuel a third-quarter rally that helped the Hawks beat the Nuggets 106-98 on Saturday night.
Collins thought back to a 138-93 loss to the Nuggets last month.
Vince Carter enjoying his decision to go to Atlanta
Vince Carter could have gone anywhere.
To a contender, to chase a ring. To retirement, because he has nothing left to prove. To television, which seems like it will be his next vocation whenever his playing days end.
Instead, he chose Atlanta — a young team, a rebuilding team, a team that probably has minimal chance of making the playoffs.
Lowry’s triple-double leads Raptors, Carter gets milestone
ATLANTA (AP) — Vince Carter grabbed his career milestone with a last-second dunk — long after his first NBA team had the victory secured.
Kyle Lowry scored 21 points during his first triple-double of the season and the Toronto Raptors never trailed while beating the reeling Atlanta Hawks 124-108 on Wednesday night.
James nets 26, dunks for winner as Lakers edge Hawks 107-106

Kyle Kuzma added 18 points for the Lakers' fifth win in six games.
Kuzma's layup tied the game at 104-all with 1:34 to go.
Kent Bazemore was called for a technical at the end of that play and Kuzma made the free throw for a 105-104 lead.
Vince Carter dunked to put the Hawks back up 106-105.
Trae Young scores 24 as Hawks beat Heat 123-118
ATLANTA (AP) — On one of the best nights of his young career, Trae Young's favorite pass set up Vince Carter, the league's oldest player.
Young had 24 points and a career-high 15 assists, Carter's jumper gave Atlanta the lead for good, and the Hawks beat Josh Richardson and the Miami Heat 123-118 on Saturday.
Carter's 17-foot jumper off a pass from the 20-year-old Young broke a 118-all tie.
"Vince is the man," Young said of the 41-year-old Carter.
Vinsanity grinds into a 21st season, rare company in the NBA
ATLANTA (AP) — Vince Carter feels like a 20-something again.
Always does when this time of year rolls around.
Never mind the specks of gray in his beard, all the wear and tear on his body, a resume that shows he entered the NBA the same year teammate Trae Young was born.
Atlanta Hawks dig in for another long slog
ATLANTA (AP) — There is almost certainly pain coming for the Hawks, or at least their fans, yet first-time NBA head coach Lloyd Pierce and second-year general manager Travis Schlenk refuse to notarize that word while in charge of Atlanta's only woebegone pro team.
Training camp begins Tuesday for the team that last season lost more games than any other in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks were 24-58, and their offseason moves are not likely to move them closer to playoff contention.
Vince Carter, at 41, not quite ready to call it a career
ATLANTA (AP) — Vince Carter can't say his 21st NBA season will be his last.
At least not yet.
Carter signed a one-year veteran minimum contract Friday with the rebuilding Atlanta Hawks, his eighth team, in what could be his final stop before starting a career in broadcasting.
It appears to be the right mix for Carter, the league's oldest active player. He turns 42 in January and wants to be ready for a television job when his playing days end.
ATLANTA (AP) — Veteran Vince Carter is the latest addition to the new-look Atlanta Hawks.
The 41-year-old Carter has agreed to a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Hawks, said a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.
Carter was given the veteran's minimum deal to provide veteran leadership on a rebuilding Atlanta squad entering its first season with coach Lloyd Pierce.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Golden State guard Patrick McCaw has been cleared to do some modified shooting and on-court running following a frightening fall at Sacramento on March 31 when he lost feeling in his lower half and was taken out on a stretcher with a severely bruised lower back.
The team says the second-year pro was re-evaluated Thursday and will be examined by team medical staff again in four weeks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — In a silenced arena, two teams gathered together under the basket to pray for Patrick McCaw as Golden State's second-year guard was rushed away on a stretcher.

New-look Grizzlies leaning heavily on Parsons in new era
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies made significant roster moves during the offseason and still believe they can extend the franchise's streak of seven straight playoff appearances.
It all hinges on the health of Chandler Parsons' knees.
Rest: Frowned upon when NBA games count, not in preseason
MIAMI (AP) — There is no NBA mandate urging teams to not rest players in the preseason.
The old guys are coming up big so far in these playoffs
George W. Bush was early in his first term as president. Seattle was years away from losing the SuperSonics. "Arrested Development" hadn't even started airing yet.
That's how long ago Utah's Joe Johnson and Houston's Nene made their NBA debuts.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Mike Conley showed a deft shooting touch even through a half-closed eye.
Conley, still showing some swelling from a gash under his right eyebrow, connected on 12 of 17 shots en route to 31 points as the Memphis Grizzlies clinched the Western Conference's No. 7 seed with a 101-88 victory over the short-handed New York Knicks on Friday night.

He succeeded, in a big way.

Memphis (41-34) had lost four in a row, all on the road.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies went old school to solve their recent shooting woes, plugging 40-year-old Vince Carter into the starting lineup for the first time this year.
Carter made all eight of his shots, including six from beyond the arc, to score a season-high 24 points and lead the Grizzlies past the Milwaukee Bucks 113-93 on Monday night.

Conley scored 32 points, including 11 in the last four minutes, and Marc Gasol had 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the hapless Brooklyn 112-103 on Monday night.
"Take over, and I love that. He (Conley) or Marc Gasol, or both at any time," Grizzlies coach David Fizdale said. "Their light is super green to take the game over."

These old men: Carter, near 40, leads NBA’s elder statesmen
Vince Carter is no longer the NBA's highest flyer, though he's certainly not ready to be grounded.
Once one of basketball's most ferocious dunkers who put opponents on posters long before there were internet Vines, he can no longer rely just on his athleticism. Nearing 40 years old, the guy who famously put his arm through the rim while winning a dunk contest now often plays below it.
Like everyone who wants to keep playing toward middle age, it's about the mind now as much as the legs.
Grizzlies beat Nuggets at the buzzer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Trailing by one point, the Memphis Grizzlies had no timeouts and little time. For the oldest player in the NBA, the obstacles were simply a welcome challenge.
Thirty-nine-year-old Vince Carter tossed a perfectly timed, and expertly lobbed, inbounds pass to 7-footer Marc Gasol and he dropped in a shot as the buzzer sounded to lift the Grizzlies to a 108-107 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.
The Memphis Grizzlies have wanted Chandler Parsons since the forward knocked down an NBA-record 10 3-pointers in a half against them in January 2014. Now, they finally have the outside shooter they've tried — and failed — to land for so many years. The Grizzlies also have someone eager to lure more top talent to Tennessee. "Being the first big-name free agent to come here, I think that's special, and I want to be a trendsetter here," Parsons said Friday. "I'm going to work...
