Rutgers player suspended after domestic violence incident
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University has indefinitely suspended basketball player Caitlin Jenkins following her arrest on simple assault and criminal mischief charges.
Jenkins did not play in Sunday's road game at Minnesota and the team announced her suspension in a post-game notes release, citing a violation of team policy.

The move worked and the 17th-ranked Scarlet Knights rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Indiana 69-64 on Thursday night behind a career-high 22 points from Ciani Cryor.
"Something had to jump-start it," Stringer said. "We were down by 14 points and that's a quick way to get an easy layup."

Scarlet Knights coach C. Vivian Stringer announced the transfer Tuesday. The 5-foot-6 guard from Beaumont, Texas, will have three years of eligibility remaining when she starts playing next January.

Carey scored a career-high 30 points and the No. 20 Scarlet Knights remained perfect in the conference with a 76-62 victory over 17th-ranked Michigan State on Sunday.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — One of the nation's top girls high school basketball players appears likely to remain benched for her entire senior season after spending part of last summer playing with USA Basketball.
Maori Davenport, who received an $857.20 check from USA Basketball that was later repaid, has been trying to get into games this season in Troy, Alabama after being suspended by state high school officials.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has always strongly backed its Division I women's basketball programs, a trend that dates back decades.
Fans from across the state had reason to celebrate on Monday as three of their teams landed in the Top 25 for the first time since 1998. The Hawkeyes (4-1) lead the way at No. 14, followed by Iowa State (5-0) at No. 23 and Drake (7-1) at No. 24.
Iowa joined Texas as the only states with a trio of ranked teams this week.

NEW YORK (AP) — When C. Vivian Stringer first started coaching 46 years ago, there weren't many female African-American basketball coaches to turn to for advice. So she looked elsewhere.
"Everyone that was helping me was men," she said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "Men like John Chaney, John Thompson, Nolan Richardson took me under their wing. I had so much respect for them that I was able to learn and they were kind enough to teach."

NEW YORK (AP) — Lindsay Whalen got her first win as a coach and C. Vivian Stringer moved within one victory of 1,000 as women's college basketball tipped off its season.
Whalen took over at her alma mater Minnesota this year and led the Gophers to an opening win in front of an announced crowd of 14,625. It was the most ever to watch a women's basketball game at Williams Arena. They had a lot to cheer about as the Gophers beat New Hampshire by 23 points.
Rutgers spurns WNIT bid after not being pick for NCAAs
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — After failing to get a berth in the women's basketball NCAA Tournament, Rutgers and coach C. Vivian Stringer decided not to play in the WNIT.
The Scarlet Knights (20-12) were among the eight finalists for the four remaining spots in the NCAA field. Buffalo, Creighton, Minnesota and Oklahoma got in. Rutgers, Purdue, Southern Cal and West Virginia were the first four teams out.

NEW YORK (AP) — Purdue and West Virginia just missed out on the NCAA Tournament.
The two schools will still be playing in the postseason as they headline the WNIT field that was announced Monday night.
They were among the final eight teams revealed by the NCAA on Sunday night and ended up on the outside of the tournament. Rutgers and Southern Cal also were among the first four teams out of the NCAAs.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Chattanooga's Jim Foster earned his 900th career victory to move into a tie for seventh place on the NCAA's all-time list Thursday as the Mocs breezed to a 58-41 victory over Western Carolina.
Foster improved his career record to 900-342 in 40 seasons at St. Joseph's, Vanderbilt, Ohio State and Chattanooga.

Foster was playing on a CYO team at 13 when his coach quit and a priest selected Foster as player-coach for the rest of the season.

NEW YORK (AP) — After a two-year hiatus, C. Vivian Stringer has Rutgers back in The Associated Press women's basketball poll.
The Scarlet Knights jumped into the AP Top 25 on Monday at No. 21, riding an 11-game winning streak. Rutgers was last ranked on March 2, 2015.
There was a time not so long ago when Rutgers was a staple in the Top 25, but the team went through some lean years before returning to the rankings. Rutgers is in the midst of a remarkable turnaround after going 6-24 last season.
Rutgers’ C. Vivian Stringer gets 4-year contract extension
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers has given Hall of Fame women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer a four-year contract extension.
Athletic Director Pat Hobbs announced the agreement on Thursday, a little more than a week before Stringer will start her 23rd season at Rutgers with a game at James Madison on Nov. 10.
Stringer will earn $3.4 million under the contract that will run through the 2020-21 season.
Jones center of attention for 3rd-ranked Maryland women
