FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart fretted following the regular-season opener after the Seattle Storm lost at home to the Phoenix Mercury.
"We thought, 'Oh, crap, what kind of year is this going to be?'" Bird reminisced.
The answer came nearly four months later with a championship.
Stewart led the Storm to their third WNBA title Wednesday night, scoring 30 points in a 98-82 victory over the Washington Mystics in Game 3 of the best-of-five series.

Jewell Loyd scores 23, Storm beat Mystics 89-76 in Game 1
SEATTLE (AP) — Jewell Loyd was unselfish in the deciding game of the WNBA semifinals, giving up her spot on the floor and choosing not to mess with what was going right for the Seattle Storm at the time.
Her decision appeared to be rewarded in Game 1 of the Finals.
"It's amazing how many times when you're thinking right like she (is), and you're unselfish like she was in Game 5, how you are rewarded the next time," Seattle coach Dan Hughes said.
Storm, Mystics look to enjoy experience of WNBA Finals
SEATTLE (AP) — Sue Bird leaned over toward Breanna Stewart and made sure the current MVP of the WNBA was paying attention to what the oldest player in the league was saying.
"This is advice," Bird said.
The message to Stewart was clear: At age 24, don't take for granted that she's leading the Seattle Storm to the WNBA Finals and expect it to happen all the time.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Lindsay Whalen scored 10 points in the final regular-season home game of her career, Sylvia Fowles set the WNBA season record for rebounds and the Minnesota Lynx closed the season with a 88-83 victory over the Washington Mystics on Sunday night.
The Target Center had 13,013 in attendance for the game. Governor Mark Dayton declared it "Lindsay Whalen Day" in Minnesota and a retirement ceremony followed the game.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Natasha Cloud made a fade-away jumper just before the buzzer to give the Washington Mystics a 69-67 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday night for their eighth straight victory.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ariel Atkins scored 26 points, Elena Delle Donne added 23 and the Washington Mystics won their sixth straight, beating the Dallas Wings 93-80 on Sunday.
The Wings announced several hours after the game that coach Fred Williams was being relieved of his duties following an eighth straight loss.
The Mystics (20-11) pulled away to a 51-37 halftime lead with a 25-9 run to close the second quarter and extended the advantage to 70-46 on Atkins' 3-pointer with 3:18 left in the third.

Washington never trailed and led by as many as 27 points.

Toliver led Washington (16-11) with 16 points, including eight in the final two minutes. LaToya Sanders added 15 points and Natasha Cloud scored 13. Elena Delle Donne, who came in fourth in the WNBA in scoring at 20.9 per game, finished with just five points on 2-of-9 shooting.
Travel woes force cancellation of Aces-Mystics game
After traveling for over 25 hours, the Las Vegas Aces players decided not to play a game against the Washington Mystics on Friday night.
The decision to cancel the game was made about 1 1/2 hours before the tip.
The Aces players issued a statement through their union Friday night.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Wings and Washington Mystics have exchanged backup guards, with Tayler Hill and a second-round pick in next year's draft going to Dallas for Aerial Powers.
The trade announced Monday includes the right for the teams to swap first-round picks in the 2019 WNBA draft.

The All-Star captain had 15 of her 30 points in the opening period to help Washington beat the New York Liberty 95-78 on Saturday.
"It definitely helps the spread the floor better when I'm hitting shots," said Delle Donne, who also had 10 rebounds.
She hit all six of her shots in the opening period, including three 3-pointers — most of them just swishing through the net.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elizabeth Cambage had 35 points and 17 rebounds, breaking the WNBA's two-game scoring record, and the Dallas Wings beat the Washington Mystics 90-81 on Thursday night.
Coming off a historic 53-point performance Tuesday, Cambage broke Minnesota star Maya Moore's record two-game total of 80 points set in 2014. Cambage also became the first player with back-to-back 30-point, 10-rebound games since Moore in 2014.

Rookie Ariel Atkins added a season-best 21 points in her first start for Washington (5-1), which was without star Elena Delle Donne for a second straight game due to an illness. Toliver made 10 of 16 shots from the field, and the Mystics went 11 of 17 from 3-point range.
