Sounders acquire defender Waylon Francis from Columbus
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Sounders have bolstered their defense by acquiring defender Waylon Francis from Columbus in exchange for $50,000 in general allocation money.
Seattle made its first significant move of the offseason on Thursday by adding depth to a position of need. Seattle is losing starting left back Joevin Jones to a club in Germany this offseason and while Nouhou Tolo played well during his opportunities for the Sounders, Francis provides depth and experience.
Meram, Crew rally for 3-1 win over Fire
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Justin Meram scored in the 73rd minute to help the Columbus Crew beat the Chicago Fire 3-1 on Saturday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
Meram, with the outside of his right foot, tapped home a cross by Waylon Francis to give Columbus (11-12-2) its first lead. Wil Trapp perfectly placed a long, arcing pass down the left side to Francis, who fed Meram at the top of the 6-yard box for the finish.
Finlay scores in 80th, 95th minutes; Crew tie NYCFC 3-3
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ethan Finlay scored in the 80th and 95th minutes to help the Columbus Crew tie New York City FC 3-3 on Saturday night.
David Villa gave New York City a 3-2 lead in the 92nd minute, converting a penalty kick for his 15th goal of the season. Columbus answered three minutes later when Finlay sent a loose ball into the back of the net.
