Indians acquire RHP Hu from Tampa for infielder Turner
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have acquired right-hander Chih-Wei Hu (chee-way-hoo) in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Gionti Turner.
The trade was announced Monday. The 25-year-old Hu made just five relief appearances with the Rays in 2018. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Durham, where he went 5-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 24 games, including 19 starts.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nine years after drafting Kyle Gibson in the first round and six seasons into his major league career, the faith the Minnesota Twins have had in the lanky right-hander has finally been rewarded on a consistent basis.
He's gained a greater level of confidence in himself, too.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier has a torn ligament in his right thumb that requires surgery and could be sidelined for two to three months.
The Rays placed the defensive whiz on the 10-day disabled list Monday, a day after he was injured sliding head-first into second base during a 10-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The club said surgery will be scheduled "in the coming days."
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tampa Bay right-hander Matt Andriese has left the Rays' game against Texas in the second inning with a mild groin strain.
Andriese walked off the mound after striking out Ryan Rua for the second out, and a Rays trainer came out to check on him along with manager Kevin Cash. After a brief conversation, Andriese threw one warm-up pitch before leaving Tuesday night's game.
Chih-Wei Hu, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham earlier in the day, replaced Andriese.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled pitchers Hunter Wood and Chih-Wei Hu from the minor leagues while sending down reliever Jose De Leon and putting outfielder Peter Bourjos on the 10-day disabled list because of tennis elbow.
Wood can become the second Rays reliever this season to make his major league debut after bypassing Triple-A Durham. Jose Alvarado did it against Miami on May 3 following his promotion from Double-A Montgomery.
Rays make trade with Mariners, set 40-man roster
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have traded infielder/outfielders Taylor Motter and Richie Shaffer to the Seattle Mariners for minor leaguers Dalton Kelly, Andrew Kittredge and Dylan Thompson.
The deal was among the moves Tampa Bay made in setting its 40-man roster before the reserve list deadline Friday night.
Motter made his major league debut this year, batting .188 in 34 games over two stints with the Rays. Shaffer appeared in 51 games over the past two seasons, hitting .213.
