BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — An Olympic champion was among four Thai weightlifters to test positive for doping, the International Weightlifting Federation said Tuesday.
Sopita Tanasan, who won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, tested positive for steroids and artificial testosterone after finishing fourth at the world championships in November.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — A former world record-holding weightlifter has been banned for eight years in a doping case which caused confusion at the 2016 Olympics.
Lin Tzu-Chi of Taiwan held the world record in the women's 63-kilogram category ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but was suddenly withdrawn on the day of competition. Hours later, it emerged she had failed a doping test ahead of the games.
Deng Wei of China won the gold, breaking Lin's record in the process.

Moradi breaks long-standing weightlifting world record
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Iranian weightlifter Sohrab Moradi has broken a 19-year-old world record.
The 29-year-old Moradi set a record for the snatch in the 94-kilogram division en route to the Asian Games gold medal on Saturday. He completed his set of world marks in the division when he lifted 189 kilograms in the snatch to break Akakios Kakiasvilis' record of 188 set in 1999.
Moradi went on to set a games record with a total of 410.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Double European weightlifting champion Oleksandr Pielieshenko of Ukraine is facing the second doping ban of his career.
The International Weightlifting Federation said in a statement Monday that Pielieshenko had tested positive for chlorthalidone, a diuretic which can be used to mask the presence of other banned substances.
Comm Games Federation rejects ban on transgender lifter
The Commonwealth Games Federation has rejected a call from the Australian Weightlifting Federation to have a New Zealand transgender athlete barred from competing at April's games on Australia's Gold Coast.
The chief executive of the Australian federation, Mike Keelan, has written to the International Weightlifting Federation calling for New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard to be excluded from the games because she has a physical advantage over "female-born" athletes.

BANGKOK (AP) — The 78-year-old Tamas Ajan has won a fifth term as International Weightlifting Federation president, amid criticism of the sport's record of doping at the Olympics.
The IWF says Ajan beat Antonio Urso, the Italian leader of European weightlifting, 86-61 in a vote of member federations. Seven candidates had entered the contest.
Hungarian official Ajan has led the Budapest-based IWF since 2000. He was previously its CEO-like secretary general for 25 years.
2 Moldova weightlifters fail drug tests
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Two medalists from the European weightlifting championships have been suspended after failing drug tests.
The International Weightlifting Federation says Moldovan competitors Iurie Dudoglo and Alexandr Spac tested positive for turinabol, a drug developed in the former East Germany to aid muscle growth.
Dudoglo won silver in the 56-kilogram category last month, while Spac was 11th at 77kg. He was a bronze medalist in 2012.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Weightlifting coach Michael Gingras has accepted a 12-year sanction from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for prohibited doping conduct.
USADA said Thursday that the 31-year-old Gingras, from Milwaukie, Oregon, admitted possessing, trafficking and administering testosterone, and possessing and trafficking LGD-4033, a selective androgen receptor modulator to an athlete.
The sanction began Jan. 16, the date Gingras admitted the violations.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Belarusian weightlifter Stanislav Chadovich has been banned for four years for trying use substitute urine in a pre-Olympic doping test.
Chadovich had been entered into the 62-kilogram category at last year's Rio de Janeiro Games and was considered a medal contender before he was withdrawn from competition with no explanation.
Russian weightlifter fails retest of Olympic doping sample
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Russian weightlifter Khadzhimurat Akkayev has failed a retest of his doping sample from the 2012 Olympics.
The International Weightlifting Federation says Akkayev's sample, taken shortly before the London Games, was found to contain the banned steroid turinabol, and a disciplinary case was underway.
Akkayev pulled out of the 2012 Olympics, citing an injury, before he was due to compete in the 105-kilogram class.
3 Chinese weightlifters lose 2008 Olympic titles for doping
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Three Chinese women weightlifters have been stripped of Olympic titles for doping at their home 2008 Beijing Games.
China faces a one-year ban from international weightlifting which should be triggered for having three Olympic doping disqualifications in a re-testing program by the IOC, which announced the verdicts on Thursday.
16-year-old Romanian weightlifter suspended for doping
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The International Weightlifting Federation has suspended 16-year-old Alina-Alexandra Popovici for four years and banned Yuliya Kalina for two years for doping.
The federation says Popovici, Romania's national champion in the 48-kilogram category, tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozol in an out-of-competition test.
Turkish weightlifter Ozkan loses Olympic doping appeal
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Turkish weightlifter Sibel Ozkan has lost an appeal against a doping sanction which cost her a silver medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Ozkan, who finished second in the women's 48-kilogram class in Beijing, tested positive for the steroid stanozolol in a reanalysis of her urine sample this year and was retroactively disqualified by the IOC.
Kazakh weightlifter Ilyin stripped of 2 Olympic gold medals
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) — Kazakhstan weightlifter Ilya Ilyin, one of the sport's biggest names, has been stripped of his two Olympic gold medals.
The International Olympic Committee stripped Ilyin of the gold medals he won in 2008 and 2012, both in the 94-kilogram class, the Kazakhstan Olympic Committee said in a statement on Wednesday. The IOC has yet to comment.
"I'm shaken today, obviously in shock," Ilyin said in comments reported by Kazakh news site Tengri. "I'm thinking about an appeal."

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A Romanian weightlifter who won a bronze medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics could lose his medal after failing a doping test.
Gabriel Sincraian, who won bronze in the men's 85-kilogram category in Rio, tested positive for excess testosterone, the International Weightlifting Federation said Thursday. The test was connected to the Olympics, the IWF said without specifying exactly when it was taken.

China faces 1-year ban from weightlifting over doping
MOSCOW (AP) — China is facing a one-year ban from weightlifting over repeated doping cases in a move which threatens to stop some of the world's top athletes from competing internationally.
