MOSCOW (AP) — Weston McKennie's late header gave Schalke a 1-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday as the German team continued to recover from a poor start to the season.
Neither team had much cutting edge as chances were missed on a wet night in Moscow, but McKennie made the difference in the 88th minute when the 20-year-old U.S. midfielder leapt unmarked at the far post to head in Yevhen Konoplyanka's corner. It was McKennie's first professional club goal.

Porto earns 1-1 draw at Schalke in Champions League opener
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann saved one penalty but was beaten by another as Porto salvaged a 1-1 draw in their Champions League-opening game on Tuesday.
Brazilian midfielder Otavio scored the equalizing penalty with 15 minutes remaining, despite complaints from the home side that Moussa Marega fell under minimal contact from Naldo.
"It was a dive," said Naldo, the Schalke defender who was also at fault for the first penalty after a hand-ball in the 12th minute.
McKennie has bruised knee, not sprained knee as announced
CHICAGO (AP) — U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie has a bruised left knee, not a sprain as first announced.
McKennie left the Americans' 1-0 exhibition win over Mexico on Tuesday night in the 40th minute after injuring the knee. The U.S. Soccer Federation originally called the injury a sprain, but said Wednesday he was re-evaluated and has a bruise and no sprain.

Leon Goretzka, one of the club's leaders, delivered a message.
"I made two bad passes in a keep-away and possession game we were playing, and Leon was like, 'Wes, you've got to make those passes. This isn't the U-19s anymore,'" McKennie recalled. "I was like: Oh, no."

Weston McKennie, an 18-year-old midfielder from Texas, made his first competitive start for Schalke in a 2-0 win at the fourth-tier team Dynamo Berlin on Monday in the first round of the Germany Cup.
