Longtime USTA CEO Gordon Smith to retire at end of year

Coast Guard pioneer, race riot survivor laid to rest
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — The first African-American woman to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard and one of the last survivors of a race riot in Oklahoma has been laid to rest with military honors.
A funeral was held Wednesday in White Plains, New York, for Olivia Hooker. She was 103 years old when she died on Nov. 21.
The Coast Guard says Hooker enlisted in the Coast Guard Women's Reserve in 1945 and rose to the rank of yeoman second class before her discharge in 1946.
Patrick Galbraith elected president of US Tennis Association
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Patrick Galbraith is the new board chairman and president of the U.S. Tennis Association.
The USTA announced the election of Galbraith on Tuesday. He succeeds Katrina Adams, who served an unprecedented two consecutive terms.
Adams was the first African-American and first former professional tennis player to serve as USTA president. Adams will serve the next two years as immediate past president.
Osuigwe, 16, clinches Australian Open wild card from USTA
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Whitney Osuigwe, a 16-year-old from Florida, has earned an Australian Open wild-card berth from the U.S. Tennis Association.
Osuigwe clinched a spot in the field at next year's first Grand Slam tournament by faring the best in recent lower-level tournaments, including a title at a USTA Pro Circuit event in Tyler, Texas.
She played in the main draw at a major championship for the first time at the 2018 U.S. Open, gaining entrance by winning the USTA 18s national title.
White Plains unveils fleet of electric school buses

Police: 1 dead in highway crash north of New York City
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a woman was killed when her car rammed into a parked construction truck on a highway north of New York City.
State police say Patricia Jimenez-Gaylor's 2018 Nissan SUV struck the 1991 Ford F550 around 1:30 a.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 287 in White Plains.
The 49-year-old Mamaroneck woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the construction truck was treated for minor injuries.
FBI says man planned to bomb National Mall on Election Day
NEW YORK (AP) — Federal authorities have charged a New York man with building a 200-pound (90-kilogram) bomb they say he planned to detonate on Election Day on the National Mall in Washington.
Paul Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, was charged Wednesday with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive.
Ex-hedge fund manager gets 8 years in prison for $22M scam
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A former hedge fund manager has been sentenced in New York to eight years in prison after cheating 45 investors of over $22 million.
Michael Scronic was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibel in White Plains.
The 46-year-old Scronic also was ordered to pay $22 million to his victims.
Man gets sex offender probation in nanny video case
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A former CNBC television director has been sentenced to five years' probation for spying on his family's nanny with a hidden camera in his suburban New York home.
Daniel Switzen of Pleasantville pleaded guilty in May to unlawful surveillance.
He was sentenced on Tuesday. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said that Switzen will have to register as a sex offender.
Westchester mom pleads not guilty in death of daughter
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A Westchester mother accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter has pleaded not guilty to murder.
Cynthia Arce (ahr-SAY') entered the plea at her arraignment in Westchester County Court on Tuesday to charges that also included aggravated attempted murder for allegedly stabbing two police officers who were trying to save her ailing daughter.
NY man pleads guilty to manslaughter in road rage stabbing
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of a Westchester man during a road rage incident.
The Westchester County district attorney's offices say 22-year-old Christian Walczyk (WAHL'-zihk), of Pleasant Valley in Dutchess County, entered the plea on Monday.
NY man gets prison for fatally attacking wife in bed
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man who fatally attacked his wife as she lay in bed has been sent to prison by a judge who called him a "gutless coward."
Westchester County Judge Barry Warhit sentenced Joseph Abraham of Yonkers on Wednesday to 18 years to life behind bars.
Amanda Trenck, who was the mother of a little girl, was slain in May 2017.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A former financial services executive has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2016 death of his estranged wife, a prominent doctor, in their suburban New York home.
Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. says Julius Reich (rysh) was sentenced on Wednesday.
Dr. Robin Goldman, a pediatrician, was stabbed 22 times with an 8-inch kitchen knife as she took a shower. She still shared a Scarsdale home with Reich while they were getting a divorce.

Russian star Maria Vadeeva enjoying time in WNBA with Sparks
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Maria Vadeeva dreamed of playing in the WNBA after growing up watching Diana Taurasi and Lauren Jackson compete in the Russian Basketball League.
It fueled her love of the sport.
Now the 20-year-old Russian star is living out those childhood hopes with the Los Angeles Sparks, who drafted her with the No. 11 pick last April.

American defender Robinson loaned to Wigan
American defender Antonee Robinson has signed a three-year contract with Everton and has been loaned to second-tier Wigan for the 2018-19 season.
The 20-year-old made 30 league appearances and 34 in all during a loan to second-tier Bolton last season. Everton announced his new deal Friday.
Robinson made his U.S. national team debut on May 28 against Bolivia. He spent part of his youth in White Plains, New York, and was eligible to play for both England and the U.S.

David Rojas pleaded guilty in March and was sentenced on Monday for the November attack.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Two former correction officers convicted of severely beating a New York state prison inmate in 2013 and then falsifying records to cover up the attack have been sentenced.
A federal judge in Westchester County on Monday sentenced Kathy Scott to eight years and four months in prison while George Santiago Jr. got seven years and three months in prison.
Delle Donne scores 30 as Mystics beat Liberty 95-78
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — When Elena Delle Donne gets going early, it makes the Washington Mystics' offense flow so much better.
The All-Star captain had 15 of her 30 points in the opening period to help Washington beat the New York Liberty 95-78 on Saturday.
"It definitely helps the spread the floor better when I'm hitting shots," said Delle Donne, who also had 10 rebounds.
She hit all six of her shots in the opening period, including three 3-pointers — most of them just swishing through the net.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Open women's and men's singles champions will each get $3.8 million and the Grand Slam tennis tournament's total prize money will rise to $53 million.

The U.S. Tennis Association says Friday it's the first time that every match at the year's last Grand Slam tournament will have the technology.

Taurasi scores 27, Mercury beat Liberty 83-69
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Diana Taurasi scored 27 points, making her first seven 3-point attempts, and the Phoenix Mercury snapped a two-game skid with an 83-69 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday night.
Phoenix (11-5) scored the last seven points of the third quarter to lead 67-48. New York (4-9) closed within 11 in the middle of the quarter before the Mercury pulled away for good.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Ed Croke, the New York Giants' former public relations director, died Wednesday. He was 86.
The NFL team said Croke died at his home in Jupiter, Florida.
Croke joined the Giants in 1965 as director of promotions and was public relations from 1972 until retiring in 1993.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Tina Charles helped the New York Liberty get a much-needed win.
The Liberty's star scored 29 points to help the team overcome a strong effort from Angel McCoughtry and beat the short-handed Atlanta Dream 79-72 on Tuesday night.
"It was a much-needed win being that we had just lost a couple of games," Charles said. "The defensive effort is what carried us throughout the game. Katie (Smith) put an emphasis on taking a step up on the defensive end."
