WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — Police say they found human remains in the aftermath of an explosion and fire that destroyed a home in eastern Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police said in a statement that dispatchers got a call Sunday night reporting an explosion and house fire in the Letcher County community of Neon. Police say first responders arrived to find a collapsed residence fully engulfed in flames.

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — A county official says a bridge in eastern Kentucky has partially collapsed and stranded several families across the water.
Letcher County Judge Executive Jim Ward tells WYMT-TV the bridge that collapsed Wednesday morning was weakened by recent flooding. He says crews will be on scene to build an alternate route.
Smallwood appointed to Kentucky appellate vacancy
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky lawyer has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the state Court of Appeals.
Gov. Matt Bevin appointed Gene Smallwood Jr. of Whitesburg to serve as judge on the court for Kentucky's 7th Appellate District, Division 2. The vacancy was created when Judge Janet L. Stumbo retired Dec. 31.

Eastern Kentucky couple dead in apparent murder-suicide
WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Kentucky say a man and woman have died in an apparent murder-suicide outside of their home.
Letcher County Coroner Renee Campbell tells WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/2i9h3N5) that Kentucky State Police were called to the home near Deane around 1 a.m. Saturday. She says 27-year-old Mark Mullins and 23-year-old Tiffany Hatton were found dead outside.
Both Mullins and Hatton had gunshot wounds. Campbell says the deceased were a couple who had an infant together.
