(AP) — In a story Jan. 11 about Wisconsin teenager Jayme Closs being found alive nearly three months after she vanished from the family home, The Associated Press misidentified Steve Lykken as president of the Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron. Jeannie-O Turkey Store is a national brand, and Lykken is president of the company. Its headquarters are in Willmar, Minnesota.

Willmar man gets 3 years in prison for weapons stockpile
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Willmar man who admitted that he illegally possessed a stockpile of weapons has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Forty-six-year-old Chad Lee Monson was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court.
According to court documents, authorities searched Monson's properties in January and found machine guns, pipe bombs, silencers, a large amount of ammunition and other weapons.
Remains of soldier MIA from Korean War identified
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — The remains of a Minnesota soldier was reported missing in action in North Korea 68 years ago have been identified.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency says Army Master Sgt. Carl H. Lindquist of Willmar was identified by research that included DNA, dental records and chest X-rays.
Lindquist was reported missing on Nov. 29, 1950, after a battle. He was 32 years old.
Minnesota man injured in hunting accident expected to be OK
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — A 22-year-old man was injured in a weekend hunting accident in central Minnesota, but he's expected to be OK.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office says Mitchel Macik, of Hector, was taken to a Willmar hospital by private vehicle Saturday after being shot in the leg with a small-caliber rifle bullet. He was with a group of hunters at the time.
Authorities say his injury is not life-threatening. They're continuing to investigate what happened.
Death of man found in Kandiyohi County field ruled homicide
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — Sheriff's officials say the death of a man whose body was found in a central Minnesota field is a homicide.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office says the body of 24-year-old David Medellin Jr. was found on Halloween in a field near Willmar. The cause of the man's death has not been disclosed. But, sheriff's officials say the death was ruled a homicide based on the results of an autopsy by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.
Body found in central Minnesota field
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — Authorities are working to identify a body found in a central Minnesota field.
Kandiyohi sheriff's deputies responded to the field near Willmar Wednesday about 3 p.m. The body was taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.
Johnson, Walz stress rural roots in gubernatorial debate
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — The two major party candidates for governor are debating over who would best represent greater Minnesota communities outside the metro areas.
Republican Jeff Johnson and Democrat Tim Walz both stressed their rural roots during a debate in Willmar Tuesday night. Johnson is a Hennepin County commissioner from Plymouth who grew up in Detroit Lakes. He says he wants to ease the burden of state government regulations in rural areas.
Willmar man pleads guilty to illegal arsenal of weapons
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Willmar man accused of illegally possessing a large cache of weapons has pleaded guilty in federal court.
Forty-six-year-old Chad Monson was arrested during a Jan. 30 raid of his rural Kandiyohi County home by drug and gang task force agents.
A federal grand jury in June indicted him on numerous firearms violations related to an arsenal of machine guns, ammunition, silencers and pipe bombs.
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — A couple died and a relative was critically injured when a car turned into the path of six motorcycles, hitting two, in central Minnesota, according the State Patrol.
James Young Jr., 42, and Michelle Young, 44, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Saturday on Highway 23 northeast of Willmar. They were driving two of the bikes and were in the lead of six motorcycles out for a midday ride, the sister of one of the victims said.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A western Minnesota man faces federal charges that he illegally possessed 10 machine guns as well as unregistered pipe bombs and silencers.
A federal grand jury indicted Chad Lee Monson, 46, of Willmar on numerous firearms violations last week. Monson returns to U.S. District Court for a detention hearing and arraignment Friday.

City leaders across Minnesota are passing “welcoming” resolutions in an effort to send a message that their communities are inclusive amid growing national tension around the issue of immigration.
City councils in Willmar and St. Joseph, two central Minnesota cities that are becoming increasingly diverse, are expected to discuss resolutions Monday. The measures don’t change policy but are considered symbolic.
Jerry Spencer remembers sitting on the Atwater City Council in the mid-1990s, conducting interview after interview in search of a new police chief for the central Minnesota town, population 1,100.
Reed Schmidt stood out. Social, friendly and outgoing, he just seemed like the man for the position, Spencer said.

The family of a man found dead in the Kandiyohi County Jail over the weekend will ask for a second autopsy on 56-year-old George Edward Washington, who died Sunday after being arrested the day before.
“I’m ready to take this as far as I need to,” Washington’s daughter Quinshyra Grayson of Marshall, Minn., said Monday. “Willmar is a white person’s town. No offense, but it is.
“Any time black people come into a white person’s town, there are problems.”
The Rochester Ice Hawks have been behind the eight ball since joining the North American 3 Hockey League nearly more than two years ago.
Ownership wants to get out from behind it.
"It's one of the most difficult things I've had to do," said Doc Fatis, who has owned the team for all of its 21 seasons, "but we needed to make a culture change. We were having trouble recruiting and getting players to come here. We needed to make a change."
Minnesota pollution agency to shut down Willmar office
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is permanently closing its Willmar Office on Friday.
The agency says all six staff members will keep their jobs. They either will be reassigned to other work locations or will work from the MPCA's Marshall office.
Local doctors and the city hospital in Willmar have approved plans to create a nonprofit health system that would be a subsidiary of St. Cloud-based CentraCare Health.
Set to be finalized in early 2018, the agreement includes a commitment for $32 million worth of improvements over 10 years at Rice Memorial Hospital, which is owned by the city of Willmar.
Authorities identified Wednesday the deputy who shot and wounded a man who fled police earlier this week after they responded to a domestic assault call.
Stearns County Sgt. Nathan Stewart, a 14-year officer with the Sheriffs Office, and four St. Cloud Police officers, who havent yet been named, are on standard administrative leave as the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigates the incident.
Minnesota man accused of throwing pig’s foot at Somalis
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — Authorities allege a Minnesota man threw a pig's foot at Somalis at a farmers market.
Sixty-one-year-old Joe Fernkes of Willmar is charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He's due in court Aug. 30.
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations wants Fernkes to be charged with a hate crime. The advocacy group notes that Muslims are prohibited from eating pork and that "bigots often use pigs or pork to offend Muslim sensibilities."

Willmar officers shoot, injure armed man
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a police shooting in Willmar.
The BCA says two Willmar officers shot and wounded a man after responding to a call about a suicidal male about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Officials say the officers encountered the man in the backyard of a home holding a gun. At one point during the encounter, both officers fired their guns, injuring the man.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A suburban Twin Cities man is blaming the autopilot feature of his luxury electric car for a crash that sent him and four passengers into a central Minnesota marsh.
David Clark, of Eden Prairie, says he was driving his Tesla near Willmar Saturday when the car suddenly accelerated and overturned in the marsh.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — The Willmar Lakes area of west-central Minnesota will host next year's Governor's Fishing Opener.
The 71st annual event will be held on Green Lake in Spicer. The governor's opener will be hosted collaboratively by the communities of the Willmar Lakes area, including Willmar, Spicer and New London, and smaller communities within Kandiyohi County. Green Lake also hosted the event in 1996.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota man is accused of attacking a Somali cab driver because the driver was Muslim.
Twenty-three-year-old Zachary Degraw (dee-GRAW') of Willmar is charged with bias-motivated assault, a gross misdemeanor, plus two counts of misdemeanor assault.
Court records say the cab driver picked up Degraw and a woman in St. Cloud last month and was driving them to Rollie's Rednecks & Longnecks bar when Degraw put his arm around the driver's neck and started to choke him.
$22M turkey hatchery project planned in western Indiana
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A Minnesota-based company is planning to spend $22 million to build a turkey hatchery in western Indiana.
Milder bird flu found at Jennie-O farm in Wisconsin
BARRON, Wis. (AP) — Officials confirm a low-pathogenic bird flu strain has been detected in a Jennie-O Turkey Store operation in western Wisconsin.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture posted notice of the case to the Organization for Animal Health's website Tuesday. Austin, Minnesota-based Hormel Foods Corp., which owns Willmar, Minnesota-based Jennie-O, confirmed the H5N2 strain was detected Saturday at its Barron, Wisconsin, operation.

Horse-drawn wagon goes out of control in Minnesota
WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in west-central Minnesota say a horse-drawn wagon carrying about 15 passengers crashed after the horses went out of control.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office says the crash was reported just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Deputies found an unconscious man. He was taken to the Rice Memorial Hospital emergency room in Willmar and is in critical condition.
Heavy rain leads to road closures in central Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Heavy rain dumped several inches of water in parts of central Minnesota on Wednesday night and early Thursday, leaving some streets in Willmar swamped and city officials asking residents to limit their water use.
Official totals from the National Weather Service show Olivia and Willmar saw the most rain, nearly 9 inches and about 8 inches, respectively.
