Ex-company owner to appeal Camp Minden explosives sentence
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The former owner of a company that left thousands of tons of potentially explosive artillery propellant at a Louisiana National Guard facility says he will appeal his sentence.
David Alan Smith, 63, of Winchester, Kentucky, filed a notice of appeal Friday with the federal court in Shreveport, where he was sentenced Nov. 29 in connection with what a prosecutor called the nation's worst-ever dumping of military explosives.

Police investigate 1st murder in Winchester in 3 years
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — Police in Winchester are looking for a suspect in what they say is the city's first murder since 2015.
City spokeswoman Amy Simmons told news outlets police responding Sunday night to a report of a shooting at a home found 40-year-old Jerry Wayne Reid Jr. with gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Simmons said Reid was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) _ American Woodmark Corp. (AMWD) on Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter net income of $18.5 million.
The Winchester, Virginia-based company said it had net income of $1.05 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.60 per share.
The cabinet maker posted revenue of $424.9 million in the period.
Hearing delays Camp Minden explosives sentencing
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A federal judge says she needs more information before sentencing five men who pleaded guilty in a case involving a huge explosion at a Louisiana National Guard site.
District Judge Elizabeth Foote scheduled sentencing Wednesday for Explo Systems co-owner David Alan Smith of Winchester, Kentucky, and four company officials from Louisiana.
Man dies in crash following police chase
PARIS, Ky. (AP) — Police say a Kentucky man who crashed into a tree following a police chase has died.
Kentucky State Police said in a statement that 33-year-old Lucas Vanderpool died Sunday night at the scene of the crash. The statement said officers in Winchester had chased Vanderpool's vehicle in response to a report of an armed robbery, but backed off before the crash due to the high speed of the pursuit.
Virginia police officer dies in crash
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — A Virginia police officer was killed after his vehicle crashed responding to a call.
Winchester Police said Officer Hunter Edwards died after being involved in a single vehicle crash late Saturday.
Police said Edwards was responding to a call of a fight when he crashed.

WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — Officials in Kentucky say a 45-year-old woman who had been attacked by a pit bull has died.
Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue says April Collins was discovered unresponsive by her husband Thursday, when he arrived at their home in Winchester. Authorities tell news outlets that Collins died Friday.
Winchester plant to expand, create 61 jobs
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia factory that makes film and artificial leather products is planning an expansion that will create 61 jobs.
Gov. Ralph Northam said last week that Continental plans to spend $10.3 million to expand its production facility in Winchester. The governor said Virginia beat out Mexico for the project.
Northam approved a $188,000 grant and the company will be eligible for other state incentives.

Trial starts for alleged members of violent Baltimore gang
BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal racketeering trial is getting under way for alleged members of a violent Baltimore gang who prosecutors assert are behind 10 unsolved killings going back to 2010.
One of the defendants is Montana Barronette, once described by the city's police force as Baltimore's "number one trigger puller." Prosecutors allege that Barronette and nine other men were members of a street gang called "Trained to Go" operating out of West Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood.
Event to highlight archaeological history at Red River Gorge
WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — The Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky is hosting a 30th annual Living Archaeology Weekend in September.
A release from the Daniel Boone National Forest says the event brings artisans to the location where ancient Native Americans and early settlers once lived.
For more than 50 years, archaeological studies have been conducted in the gorge area. The event's exhibits and materials are based on research and archaeological discoveries found there.
Roof collapses at Kentucky post office; no one injured
WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — A fire official says no one was injured when a roof collapsed at a Kentucky post office.
Winchester Fire Battalion Chief Christopher Whiteley tells news outlets an addition on the side of the post office collapsed Sunday in Winchester.
He says as many as 18 employees were at the building but not in the area that collapsed and they were able to get out.

4 horses die in barn fire at Kentucky farm
WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — A fire marshal says four horses have died in a fire at a Kentucky farm.
Clark County Fire Marshal Ernest Barnes tells news outlets the fire occurred early Sunday at Dragonsmeade Farm in Winchester.
Arriving firefighters found a barn partially collapsed. Barnes says the barn also contained apartments for farm workers but no one was in them at the time of the fire.
Children’s history programs offered during Civil War Weekend
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation is offering two free history programs for children during Civil War Weekend.
The Civil War Kids Camp at Star Fort will allow children to "enlist" in a unit alongside living historians and learn about camp life, soldiers' drills and life in a Civil War fort. The "History in Action" program at Fort Collier will include interactive challenges with living historians, puzzle-solving, mini-games and a scavenger hunt.
WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service is continuing a ban on ginseng harvesting in the Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern Kentucky.
Federal officials say they issued the ban in 2016 to stop the decline of wild ginseng in the area. The service previously had issued permits for ginseng collectors. The root of the plant is touted as an herbal medicine for various ailments.

Police arrest man in fatal drive-by shooting
HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — The suspect in a drive-by shooting in Massachusetts has been arrested in Virginia.
The Eagle-Tribune reports that 27-year-old Eddy Manuel Almonte, of Haverhill (HAY'-vruhl), was arrested Tuesday in Winchester, Virginia.
He is being held there while he awaits extradition.

Police said the accident happened Saturday night in Winchester when a 1999 Ford F150 pickup truck traveling east on Papermill road crossed the center line and hit a westbound 2001 Chevrolet Suburban.

Virginia man sentenced in cigarette smuggling case
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — A Virginia man has been sentenced to three years in prison for cigarette smuggling.
The U.S. attorney's office in Martinsburg said in a news release that 32-year-old Mohamed Abdo Elbarati of Winchester, Virginia, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic in contraband cigarettes in February 2016. He was sentenced Monday.
The release said Elbarati collaborated with others in a trafficking network and that they transported large quantities of cigarettes across state lines.
