Former South Dakota quarterback adjusts to Canadian league
VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Local interest in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers pretty much begins and ends with former South Dakota quarterback Chris Streveler, whose exploits in the CFL have proven to be far more compelling than whether his team wins or loses.
During a recent bye-week visit to the DakotaDome, where Streveler helped usher in the Bob Nielson era with a bang over two seasons, he got a chance to get in several workouts and catch up with his former coaches and teammates.
Manziel watches as Masoli stars for Tiger-Cats
HAMILTON, Ontario (AP) — Johnny Manziel watched from the sideline again as Jeremiah Masoli starred in the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' 31-17 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night.
Masoli completed 31 of 41 passes for 369 yards and a touchdown to help the Tiger-Cats improve to 2-1. The former Ole Miss quarterback has passed for more than 300 yards in eight consecutive games.
Syracuse QB Zack Mahoney signs with CFL team
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Former Syracuse quarterback Zack Mahoney has signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
The Blue Bombers announced the move on Friday.
A walk-on from the College of DuPage in Illinois, Mahoney played three years for the Orange and earned a scholarship prior to the start of the 2016 season. He served as the backup to starter Eric Dungey the past two seasons.
VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — University of South Dakota all-American quarterback Chris Streveler has signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Streveler is from Crystal Lake, Illinois. He was a two-year starter for the Coyotes after transferring from the University of Minnesota.
He set 20 program records at USD. Last season he was runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, given each year to the FCS offensive player of the year.
Nik Lewis breaks CFL career pass receptions record
MONTREAL (AP) — Montreal slotback Nik Lewis broke the Canadian Football League career pass receptions record Thursday night in the Alouettes' 34-31 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 35-year-old former Southern Arkansas star caught 10 passes for 88 yards to push his career receptions total to 1,031, two more than the previous mark set by former B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon.
TORONTO (AP) — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected Iowa defensive lineman Faith Ekakitie first overall in the Canadian Football League draft Sunday night.
The 6-foot-1, 304-pound Ekakitie is from Brampton, Ontario.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders took UCLA linebacker Cameron Judge with the No. 2 pick.
