OSU assistant Ryan Day gets $487K as fill-in for Urban Meyer
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State assistant Ryan Day earned an extra $487,000 for steering the Buckeyes during Urban Meyer's suspension.
That's the amount of the lump-sum bonus the university will give Day for acting as head coach from Aug. 1 through last Sunday. Meyer served a three-game suspension for mismanagement of former assistant Zach Smith.
Day was informed of the bonus in a letter dated Monday from athletic director Gene Smith. It will be paid Sept. 30.
Even with Meyer sidelined, expectations high for Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Coach Urban Meyer's future at Ohio State might be in doubt, but the talent level on the field for the Buckeyes certainly isn't a question.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State is trying to get back to business as usual while coach Urban Meyer is on paid leave, opening part of Tuesday's practice to the media even as coaches and players remained off-limits for interviews.
The first half hour of the Buckeyes' fourth practice was open for observation and photography , with acting coach Ryan Day staying at the far end of the field working with quarterbacks.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is on administrative leave as the school investigates claims his wife knew about allegations of domestic violence against former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith, who was fired last week. Co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day will run the team during the investigation. Here are some of the coaches who took interim roles at prominent programs after scandals and how they fared:
Texas Tech coach Chris Beard gathered his seniors in a tight circle around him when they came out of their final game with 9 seconds left — and one win short of the Red Raiders making it to the NCAA Final Four for the first time.
"He just told us how much he appreciated the journey, how much he loved us and appreciated us for sticking with him," Zach Smith said.
The Latest on the NCAA Tournament (all times Eastern):

Texas Tech will play top seed Villanova in the East regional final Sunday.
SIMSBURY—In the month of March, senior high school basketball players have just one thought on their minds.
“I want to be in the gymnasium another day,” said Stamford High senior co-captain Tevin St. John. “That’s why I wanted this game. That’s why I wanted this win. The goal is to keep going in the state tournament.”
And so, the Black Knight boys basketball careers of St. John and the other five seniors on the SHS roster will continue on.

Baylor notebook: Brewer makes 1st appearance; Galitz gets injured; Lovett, Mims step up
MANHATTAN, Kan. — Baylor freshman quarterback Charlie Brewer burned his redshirt when he made a brief appearance in the second quarter of Saturday’s 33-20 loss to Kansas State.
Baylor coach Matt Rhule was trying to give Kansas State a different look, but Brewer was nailed for a 1-yard loss on his only run before starter Zach Smith returned to the game.
Brewer is Baylor’s backup quarterback since Anu Solomon is under concussion protocol.
The Kansas State defense is awaiting a challenge unlike anything it has seen this season — really, since November of last year.
That’s when the Wildcats last played Baylor, the pass-heavy, now-winless team K-State is set to host on Saturday to kick off Big 12 play.
The Wildcats have recorded wins over Central Arkansas — an FCS team — and Charlotte — still without a win this year — and fallen to Vanderbilt, none of which rely remotely as much on the pass attack as the Bears do.
Denzel Mims was a four-sport athlete at Daingerfield High School, and most of the skills that made him exceptional were on full display in his breakout performance for Baylor last weekend against Oklahoma.
He showed his track speed when he got behind the Oklahoma secondary for a 71-yard bomb from Zach Smith. He unveiled one of the skills that made him a district MVP in basketball when he made several leaping catches against the Sooners.
With its emotional performance in the Big 12 opener against Oklahoma, Baylor served notice to the rest of the league that it won’t be trampled over.
The Bears battled the No. 3 Sooners to the finish at McLane Stadium as quarterback Zach Smith delivered a career-high 463 yards passing and four touchdowns and senior linebacker Taylor Young led the defense with some big hits.

DURHAM, N.C. – Baylor hoped a road trip into ACC country would translate into a reinvigorated season.
The Bears played much more inspired football against Duke than they did in their two home losses to Liberty and UTSA. But one big fourth quarter mistake proved deadly.
Baylor QB Solomon in concussion protocol; Smith, Brewer 1-2
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor quarterback Anu Solomon is going through his team's concussion protocol because of symptoms he felt after the last game.

Rhule had already announced sophomore Zach Smith as the starting quarterback when the Bears, 0-2 for the first time since 2003, play at Duke on Saturday. True freshman Charlie Brewer will be the backup.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor is making a change at quarterback after losing its first two games.
New coach Matt Rhule said sophomore Zach Smith will start Saturday at Duke. Anu Solomon, a graduate transfer from Arizona, started against Liberty and UTSA.

Finally on field: Rhule debuts as Baylor coach vs Liberty
WACO, Texas (AP) — Matt Rhule finally gets to coach a game for Baylor, nearly nine months after getting hired in the wake of the school's sexual assault scandal and more than a month after the start of fall camp.
"It'll be interesting to see how guys handle the situation of playing in the games, and that's really the next step for our team," Rhule said. "They've shown what they can do, so now how are they going to handle it in front of a crowd and in front of a good team."
John Werner’s college picks: Rhule looking to impress in Baylor debut
Following the turbulence of the last two seasons, Matt Rhule hopes to bring some stability and hope for the future to the Baylor football program.
The Rhule era will kick off against Liberty at 6 p.m. Saturday at McLane Stadium. The only FCS opponent on Baylor’s schedule, Liberty is coached by former Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill, who was Kansas’ head coach in 2010-11 before taking the Flames’ job.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Zach Smith is staying at Texas Tech for his senior season after initially entering his name into the NBA draft.
Smith can return to the Red Raiders since he didn't hire an agent. He was able to work out for some NBA teams over the last month and get some feedback from coaches and scouts.
Players who applied for early entry in the draft have until Wednesday to withdraw their names.
WACO - While the first public glimpse at Baylor's new offense was vanilla by design, there were clear indications during the Bears' spring football game that some things will be drastically different under new coach Matt Rhule.
Baylor fans and Big 12 opponents better get used to seeing Zach Smith and the other quarterbacks line up under center at times in I-formation sets with fullbacks and tight ends. That all but never happened during the last coaching regime.
