Syracuse QB Zack Mahoney signs with CFL team
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Former Syracuse quarterback Zack Mahoney has signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
The Blue Bombers announced the move on Friday.
A walk-on from the College of DuPage in Illinois, Mahoney played three years for the Orange and earned a scholarship prior to the start of the 2016 season. He served as the backup to starter Eric Dungey the past two seasons.
Syracuse was missing its quarterback and a starting wide receiver, and it showed Saturday.
The North Carolina State defense held Syracuse to 218 yards in a 35-20 victory at Syracuse, N.Y.
Syracuse (4-6, 2-4) played without sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey, who was hit in the head/shoulder area during the first quarter of a 54-0 loss to No. 3 Clemson last weekend.
Syracuse QB Eric Dungey still being tested
Syracuse is back home in the Carrier Dome on Saturday against North Carolina State, and coach Dino Babers still doesn't know who will quarterback the Orange.
Sophomore Eric Dungey was knocked out of last weekend's 54-0 loss at Clemson. His status for the upcoming game won't be known until Thursday night.
"We're waiting for the test results to come back," Babers said Wednesday.
The depth chart earlier this week listed both Austin Wilson and Zack Mahoney as backups to Dungey.
