BERLIN (AP) — Organizers of the Berlin International Film Festival say the 2019 event will open with a premiere of Danish director Lone Scherfig's new movie, "The Kindness of Strangers."
This winter's "Berlinale," the first of the year's major European film festivals, will be the last under longtime festival director Dieter Kosslick.

CANNES, France (AP) — The Cannes Film Festival can validate an aspiring filmmaker like few other places. In a year light on American directors at Cannes, one of the few trumpeted by the festival is Paul Dano, whose filmmaking debut "Wildlife" opened Cannes' Critics Week sidebar.
Oklahoma film to premiere at Sundance Film Festival
ENID, Okla. (AP) — The Paul Dano-directed movie "Wildlife" filmed in the Enid area has been selected for the Sundance Film Festival, Visit Enid Director Marcy Jarrett said.
The renowned film festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah from Jan. 18 through Jan. 28, according to the Sundance Institute.

“The Big Sick” has proven there is still lots of life in the romantic comedy, if filmmakers avoid the worn-out formulas of the genre.
The independent film has grossed $20 million in limited release, with word of mouth strong among all demographics. Our Avon screening was on one of the hottest nights of the summer, and was competing against a large street fair, but some members of the small audience applauded when the end credits began.
Zoe Kazan thinks being an actress is "a very strange profession".
The 33-year-old star thinks having a career in the entertainment industry is unusual because for "12 hours" of the day she has to "pretend" to live a lie by being someone else and loving another person, before she can return to her "normal" life.

NEW YORK — Will “The Big Sick,” a comedy inspired by the rocky real-life courtship of his American wife, make Kumail Nanjiani America’s first Pakistani-born star?
The “Silicon Valley” star made a face as Emily V. Gordon, his wife and “Big Sick” co-writer and co-producer, smiled.
“I think it’s great,” she said. “He doesn’t want to answer.”
“I just want people to see the movie,” Nanjiani, 39, said. “One step at a time.”
Film Review: Fall in love with ‘The Big Sick’
That two people could overcome centuries-old cultural obstacles, the perils of modern dating and a critical illness and end up together is a great story. That those two people also managed to adapt their own great story into a great movie is a miracle.
It's the wonder of "The Big Sick ," the must-see romantic comedy of the year. Sweet-natured, funny and genuine, you're not likely to have a more pleasant time at the cinema this summer.
