ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) — A man who jumped into a Florida zoo's crocodile enclosure has been sentenced to a year in jail.
Court records show 23-year-old Brandon Keith Hatfield of Green Cove Springs pleaded no contest Friday to multiple charges, including trespassing and criminal mischief.
St. Augustine police said Hatfield broke into the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park on Nov. 5. According to an arrest report, Hatfield caused over $5,000 in damage at the 125-year-old attraction.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hungry pandas don't particularly care whether there's a partial government shutdown.
The Washington National Zoological Park's most famous residents still need to be fed, as do thousands of other animals, even as the facility closed its gates Wednesday.
The zoo is part of the Smithsonian network of museums, and all stayed open through New Year's Day using pre-existing funds. That money has now been exhausted.
TOKYO (AP) — Police in southern Japan said Tuesday that they are investigating the death of a zookeeper in an apparent attack by a white tiger.

Zoo officials said they believe Furusho was attacked while trying to move a male tiger from its exhibition cage to its night-time cage.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A beloved bear at the Philadelphia Zoo has died.
Zoo officials said Ben, a 23-year-old Asiatic black bear, was euthanized Wednesday after being treated for a form of cancer in one of his front paws.
He underwent surgery earlier this year to remove a tumor from the paw but an October biopsy found it had returned and borrowed deeper into Ben's foot. Veterinary staffers then made the decision to euthanize him.

Lake St. Louis Republican Sen. Bob Onder pitched the idea Wednesday. His suggestion came after Senate Democrats spoke for hours Tuesday against his bill to further regulate abortions and ban fetal tissue donation.
NEW DELHI (AP) — New Delhi's zoo has been closed temporarily after nine birds died from suspected bird flu last week, a zoo official said Wednesday.
Autopsies conducted on the birds confirmed that at least two of them died from H5N1 avian influenza, said Riaz Ahmed Khan, the National Zoological Park's curator.
"We decided to close the zoo for a few days as a precautionary measure," Khan said, adding that the zoo would reopen next week.
