CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Moose calves are dying at unprecedented levels in New England, mostly because of the hordes of winter ticks — as many as 90,000 on one animal — that latch onto their bodies and drain their blood.

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — For nearly 30 years, Eastern box turtles living in Aiken Estates and Hitchcock Woods in Aiken have been generating data for scientific research.
On their shells, they wear radio transmitters, which allow Dr. Lehr Brisbin and his colleagues at the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory to keep track of where the turtles roam and where they settle down when they enter winter dormancy, which also is known as hibernation.
GENEVA (AP) — Dr. Luc Hoffmann, a Swiss ornithologist and naturalist with a passion for wetlands who helped create the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and many other conservation groups, has died, wildlife groups said. He was 93.
Hoffmann died Thursday at his home in the Camargue wetlands of southeastern France, which is known for flamingos and other birds, said the Tour de Valat, a research center he founded there over a half-century ago. No cause of death was given.
