WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The director of a residence for retired Polish artists says violin virtuoso Wanda Wilkomirska, a one-time darling of the communist authorities who became a dissident, has died at age 89.
Anna Solnicka-Heller, director of the home for veteran artists, said Wilkomirska died Tuesday.
The daughter of violinist Alfred Wilkomirski, she played with two half-brothers as the Wilkomirski Trio before becoming a soloist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.
Conductor Zubin Mehta sidelined by shoulder operation
MILAN (AP) — Milan's La Scala said Wednesday that a shoulder operation is forcing conductor Zubin Mehta to take a break for at least three months and the famed opera house to change its lineup.
The theater announced substitute conductors for a concert of waltzes and a performance of the Strauss opera "Die Fledermaus" scheduled for January.
A third engagement, a benefit concert for a foundation in India scheduled for February, will be postponed until Mehta is well enough to conduct.
Mehta, Israel Philharmonic to start tour at Carnegie Hall
NEW YORK (AP) — Conductor Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra are starting a two-week North American tour at New York's Carnegie Hall.
The Oct. 25 opening-night concert will feature an all-Mozart program including the overture to "The Marriage of Figaro."
The orchestra will visit Toronto, California and Florida before returning to Carnegie Hall on Nov. 7 through Nov. 9.
