UCC Pack the Gym Night stacked with events

January 30, 2019

A showdown for first place. The unveiling of a new mascot. Plus, prizes and giveaways. There’s a lot in store for Pack the Gym Night at Umpqua Community College on Wednesday.

The Riverhawks host Lane Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams for a showdown of top teams in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

As UCC gears up for critical games on its basketball schedule, the college is inviting the community to help fill the stands.

“It’s always nice to have that extra push,” athletic director Craig Jackson said of drawing in a larger crowd. “Especially when the (UCC) teams are in the places they are and against the opponent they’re going to face.”

The sixth ranked Umpqua men’s team is currently in a three-way tie for first with Lane and Chemeketa in the South Region standings. The No. 4 Umpqua women sit one-game behind top-ranked LCC.

Along with top-tier basketball games, UCC plans to unveil the newest version of its mascot. The old costume is “graduating” from the two-year college and a new look will take over to more closely fit a recent rebranding of the athletic department.

UCC also plans to have giveaways and prizes for those that arrive early and local sports talk radio station 1490 The Score will be at the gym for a live broadcast from 4 to 6 p.m.

Doors open for the event at 4:30 p.m. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and the men start at 7:30. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 12 and under get in free. Current UCC students and faculty also receive free admission.
