Bluejays third at Creek Challenge; Eagles fifth, Pirates seventh

JOHNSON CREEK — Seniors Anthony Purpi and Lucas Sullivan won weight class titles to lead host Johnson Creek to a third place finish at the 2018 Creek Classic on Saturday.

Purpi ran his record 6-0 with a perfect five-match run through the field at 170 pounds. He won a 13-6 decision over Bradley Tech’s Lennorise Echols, scored an 11-4 decision over Milwaukee Lutheran’s Josh Boyd, beat Beloit Turner’s Nathan Draeving 6-1 and got past Cambridge’s Aiden Ciha 4-2 to reach the finals, where he pinned John Bartaszewicz at one minute, 23 seconds.

Sullivan pinned the field at 195. The returning state qualifier stuck Waterloo’s Max Besl at 1:44, Jefferson’s Curtis Kincade at 2:44, Milwaukee Lutheran’s Jawon Carr at 3:14, Markesan’s Jace Lieske at 0:26 and Kettle Moraine’s Noah Brown at 1:41.

Mateah Roehl placed third at 113, finishing 3-2 with three pins.

Isaac Hartz took seventh at 120, going 1-4 with one pin.

Ralph Hombsch took seventh at 126, finishing 1-4.

Isaiah Wollett placed second at 138. He went 4-1 with three decisions.

Dylan Gruss finished seventh at 145 with a 2-3 record.

Alejandro Saldana placed seventh at 152.

Howie Olszewski placed eighth at 160, finishing 1-4 with one pin.

Lukas David (4-2) placed second at 220. David scored pins over Waterloo’s Gavin Wright in 1:11, Bradley Tech’s Jakavion Williams at 2:53, Jefferson’s Dominic Sadowski at 2:28 and Markesan’s Daniel Saylor at 2:39 before losing an 8-4 decision to Marquette’s Charlie Gehringer in the first place match.

Heavyweight Jakob Yoshino placed ninth, finishing 1-4.

Johnson Creek travels to Hustisford for a conference triangular with the host Falcons and Parkview on Thursday.

Neff leads Eagles

Returning state medalist Dean Neff won the 160 pound weight class to lead Jefferson’s wrestlers to a fifth place finish at the Creek Classic.

Neff pinned the field — all in the first period — to open his junior season at 5-0. He stuck Menasha’s Kody Dorton at 1:19, Johnson Creek’s Howie Olszewski at 1:49, Markesan’s Devin Brooks at 0:30, Kettle Moraine’s Lucas Lirrette at 1:08 and Cambridge’s Kaden Grieser at 1:07 of the title match.

Tatiana Rios placed eighth at 120.

Sofia Brynman-Metcalf (126) placed fifth, finishing 3-2 with three pins.

Ethan Dieckman (132) placed fifth.

Logan Nguyen (138) placed eighth, finishing 1-3 with one pin.

Braeden Kalmon (145) placed sixth, going 2-3 including one decision.

Jesse Heller (152) placed fourth. He went 2-2 with two pins.

Aaron Heine (170) placed fifth, going 2-3 with a pin and a major decision. Brady Lehman (182) placed fifth, finishing 3-2 with two pins and one decision.

Curtis Kincade (195) placed fourth, going 2-3 with a pair of pins.

Dominic Sadowski (220) placed fourth, finishing 2-3 with one pin and one decision.

Heavyweight Noah Schultz placed seventh, going 2-3 with one decision.

Pirates crown two champs, finish seventh

Carlos Garcia (132) and Jordi Aguero (152) won weight class titles for Waterloo, which finished seventh at the Creek Classic with 103 points.

Garcia pinned Jefferson’s Ethan Dieckman at 1:58 and Menasha’s Jackson Restoule at 3:08, won an 8-3 decision over Kettle Moraine’s Jake Garvens and pinned Beloit Turner’s Johnson Moran to start the season 4-0.

Aguero went 4-1 in winning the 152 bracket. He scored an 8-4 decision over Marquette’s Onel Robles, lost a 12-10 decision to Markesan’s Brock Straks, then pinned Bradley Tech’s Jeremy Ingram at 3:00, Jefferson’s Jesse Heller at 2:40 and Milwaukee Lutheran’s Stacy Davis at 3:04.

Kyle Fugate (113) placed sixth.

Eduardo Garcia (120) placed fourth, finishing 3-2 with three pins.

Brandon Springer (126) placed third, going 3-2 with three pins.

Juan Alonso finished seventh at 138, going 1-3 with one decision.

Jonathon Aguero placed tenth at 145.

Jakob Garza finished 1-4 with one decision at 160 and placed ninth.

Reynol Limon went 1-3 and placed 10th at 170.

Francisco Moreno (182) placed sixth, finishing 1-3 with one pin.

Max Besl took fifth at 195, finishing 1-4 with one pin.

Gavin Wright finished sixth at 220, going 1-4 with one pin.

Heavyweight Luis Sanchez placed eighth, finishing 1-4 with one pin.

KIMBERLY — Dodgeland placed 11th at the Papermaker Invitational on Saturday.

Braxton Kohn (106) placed sixth at 106, finishing 2-2 with a pair of pins.

Jabin Tew (113) placed sixth.

Dominic McHugh (126) placed seventh. He went 2-2 with a pair of pins.

Drake Felder (132) took fourth. He went 2-2 with two decisions.

Hayden Kurth (145) placed ninth, finishing 1-3 with one pin.

Julian Thull (152) finished eighth, going 2-3 with two pins.

Andrew Benzing (16) took eighth, going 2-3 with one pin and one decision.

at Lancer invite

DELAFIELD — Lakeside Lutheran’s wrestlers placed third while Hustisford finished sixth at the St. John’s Lancer Invitational on Friday.

Lakeside scored 141 points, led by Casey Ponyicsanyi (170 pounds) and Cole Lauersdorf (182) winning their respective weight classes.

Ponyicsanyi pinned Hustisford’s Exzavor Evans in three minutes, 53 seconds and Martin Luthera’s Logan Allender in 1:52 to reach the finals, where he scored a 14-1 major decision over Palmyra-Eagle’s Austin Pogreba.

Lauersdorf received a first round bye and scored pins over Winnebago Lutheran Academy’s Isaac Thelen in 1:46 and Pius XI’s Julien Hernandez in 3:36 for his title.

Max Thiele placed second at 160. He pinned Living Word Lutheran’s Logan Werner in 5:23 and Pius XI’s David Chrisbaum at 3:54 to reach the finals, where he lost by fall to Martin Luther’s Peyton Smith at 4:32.

Nick Thomas placed fourth at 120, finishing 2-2 with two pins. Isaiah Terry also wrestled at 120 and finished 0-2.

Riley Schmidt placed third at 126, finishing 3-1 with three pins.

Jack Milbrath was 0-2 at 132, as was Jesse Horta at 138.

Josh Groninger placed fourth at 138, finishing 2-2 with two pins.

Cooper Clark finished 0-2 at 145.

Jacob Horta went 1-3 at 152 and placed fourth.

Joe Balistreri placed third at 195, finishing 2-1 with a pin and a decision.

Austin Meyer placed second at 220. Meyer pinned Winnebago Lutheran Academy’s Eric Peikert at 0:53 and Martin Lutheran’s Keygan Jones at 1:11 to reach the finals, where he lost by fall to Winnebago Lutheran Academy’s Noah Hoppe.

Austin Haley also wrestled at 220 and finished 0-2.

Heavyweight Brandon Kilian was 0-2.

Lakeside competes at the Winnebago Lutheran Academy invitational on Saturday.

Hustisford scored 55 points and sent two wrestlers to the finals.

Kody Schmidt (120) and Logan Nicholls (195) each finished second. Schmidt pinned Kenosha St. Joseph’s Ryan Paupore at 1:09 and Lakeside Lutheran’s Nick Thomas at 2:29 to reach the finals, where he lost by fall to Pius XI’s Carmen Reynoso-Perez in 3:33.

Nicholls won a 5-2 decision over Martin Luther’s Nate Crawly and a 6-2 decision over Lakeside Lutheran’s Joe Balistreri to reach the finals, where he lost by fall to Palmyra-Eagle’s Jake Pronchinske at 1:17.

Ethan Wilder finished 0-2 at 160.

Exzavor Evans went 3-2 at 170 with three pins. Evan Nicholls finished 0-2 at 220. Gavan Stark placed fourth at heavyweight, going 2-1 with two pins.

Hustisford hosts Johnson Creek and Parkview on Thursday night.
