LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — A University of Wyoming associate professor is part of a team of scientists, engineers and project specialists planning and designing what eventually will become the most advanced and powerful optical telescope on Earth.

Michael Pierce is an associate professor in UW’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.

He was invited to join the science team for the Thirty Meter Telescope Observatory Corp.

Pierce will be working with four other scientists on a special $25 million instrument.

The entire telescope is estimated to cost $1.6 billion. A site in Hawaii has been chosen for the telescope but local opposition has delayed the project. An alternate site in Spain’s Canary Islands has been selected in case the original plan doesn’t go through.
