Five interesting facts about wind
Big Wind Day coming
Big Wind Day commemorates the highest wind speed ever recorded on the planet. On April 12, 1934, the staff of the Mount Washington Observatory recorded wind speeds of 231 mph. The 85th anniversary is Friday.
Depending on their strength, winds can be known as a breeze, gale, storm or hurricane.
A prime energy source
Wind can provide energy through the use of wind turbines.
It provides recreational opportunities
Many sports and recreational activities make use of the wind. These include kite boarding, wind surfing, sailing and paragliding.
A helpful element
The wind is very useful in many ways. For instance, the winds dry up soggy, wet areas; taking the water that doesn’t absorb into the ground back up into the atmosphere.
