Post office, apartments in Maryland village damaged in fire
BURKITTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — A large fire in western Maryland early Sunday damaged the post office and a neighboring house in an historic village, emergency officials said.
Frederick County Fire and Rescue said the U.S. Post Office in Burkittsville and the house next door — which had been converted to apartments — were ablaze when firefighters arrived just before dawn.
About 75 people worked to bring the fire under control in about 90 minutes, the county’s fire and rescue division said in a news release. There was no immediate work on the fire’s cause.
Several people at home when the fire began fled their apartment units. About 10 people have been displaced in the fire’s aftermath. One resident went to a Frederick hospital for evaluation and a firefighter was taken to a Hagerstown hospital after a fall, according to the release.
Burkittsville is located about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Baltimore, near the Virginia border. The village is known for a Civil War battle and highlighted in the 1999 movie “The Blair Witch Project.”
