Pioneers no match for Chapmanville
WAYNE — Head coach Sam Cochenour and the Wayne Pioneers knew they would have their hands full when top-ranked defending Class AA boys basketball state champion Chapmanville visited Saturday. The Tigers (12-2) made quick work of Wayne (4-11) in an 87-32 victory.
Devin Collins and Brandon Elkins helped give Chapmanville an 18 point lead after the first quarter, accounting for all but seven of the 24 scored by the Tigers in the opening period. Elkins led the Tigers with 13 points and was joined in the double-figure scoring column by Collins (11), Philip Mullins (10) and Andrew Shull (12).
Chapmanville hit nine 3-point shots in the first half and put Wayne in a 48-13 hole at the break.
Head coach Brad Napier rested most of his key contributors in the second half, but Wayne still couldn’t slow down the roaring Tigers.
Wayne was led in scoring by sophomore Bryan Sansom with 11.
The Pioneers return to action against Grace Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Chapmanville next faces Nitro at home Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
