Carbondale to give free downtown parking 6-month trial run
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — A petition from hundreds of frustrated downtown Carbondale workers has netted free parking in the area for the next six months.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports the Carbondale City Council last week opened downtown for free parking starting July 1 through Jan. 1, 2020. The move came after they received the petition, which requested free parking for employees of downtown businesses. Instead the council created the trial run, making parking free for everyone. The vote was 4-2.
Free parking is limited to three hours and doesn’t apply to Amtrak parking. Overnight parking is prohibited. The city also will provide a limited number of free parking passes to downtown businesses to provide for employees who need to park longer than three hours.
