National Sailing Hall of Fame gets nod for Newport armory
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Officials in Newport have approved the sale of a building for the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
The Newport Daily News reports approved the sale of the Armory building Wednesday for a price of $1,685,000.
Sailing Hall of Fame member David Elwell says the organization has over $2 million but still needs to raise $1.7 million for renovations on the armory. Elwell says pledges total $625,000.
City officials plan to divide the armory into two condominiums. The city will keep the Newport Maritime Center in the building’s basement while the Sailing Hall of Fame will use the other two floors.
Mayor Harry Winthrop first introduced the idea of bringing the hall of fame to the city last year. Newport is already home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
