Judge: Murder defendant not competent to stand trial
A man charged with beating his girlfriend to death at a motel on Fort Wayne’s north side in May is not competent to stand trial, a judge has ruled.
David Fabela, 36, is charged with murder in the May 15 slaying of Michelle Funk-Pike, 47, and his attorney filed paperwork in August asking the court to appoint doctors “to examine the defendant for sanity.”
Witnesses said they saw Fabela wandering the Regency Inn telling guests he’d killed his girlfriend, according to court documents.
Three doctors interviewed Fabela, and Allen Superior Judge David Zent issued an order Monday finding him incompetent to stand trial “as he lacks the ability to assist counsel in his defense.”
