Mass. moves inmates to expanded Chicopee facility
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — The state Department of Correction has moved 48 female inmates from Framingham to Chicopee.
The inmates from Worcester, Hampshire, Berkshire and Franklin counties held in lieu of bail on criminal charges or serving county jail sentences have been moved to the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center in Chicopee from the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Framingham.
The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1D58Rms ) that the Chicopee facility was recently expanded. The transfers coincided with the opening of a 64-cell housing unit at the regional women’s detention center in Chicopee.
The inmates were moved from MCI-Framingham, the only state prison for women in Massachusetts, at the end of September.
The $18.5 million expansion project increased the number of cells at the seven-year-old regional center from 120 to 184.
