LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — A man who allegedly was driving drunk when he caused a crash that killed his police officer friend has been indicted on manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges.

The charges against Ricardo Dos-Santos were recently handed up by a Union County grand jury. The 29-year-old Union Township man faces up to 50 years in prison if he’s convicted on both counts.

The October 2018 crash occurred on Route 1 & 9 in Linden. Authorities say Dos-Santos was driving about 90 mph when he crashed into a SUV that was stopped at a red light.

His passenger, Hillside officer Giovanni Esposito, was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later. Dos-Santos was also injured but was released from a hospital two days later.
