Man missing after jumping from boat into Connecticut River
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Authorities have resumed their search for a man who went missing after jumping off a boat into the Connecticut River last weekend.
Ivan De Jesus Morales Mencia, of Hartford, was last seen Saturday afternoon, shortly after he jumped into the river in East Hartford.
A Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman said in a statement that the 39-year-old Mencia wasn’t wearing a life jacket and was pulled under by the current.
Officials say the boat operator threw a flotation device to Mencia but he was unable to grab it.
Five other people were on the boat.
Authorities called that section of the river “treacherous.” It has strong currents, depths of up to 40 feet and underwater obstructions that make it difficult to dive. The search resumed Monday.
