CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An 85-year-old Nevada prison inmate serving a life sentence for murder has died behind bars, and authorities said Thursday they were still seeking to notify next-of-kin.

Allen Battenfield died Jan. 31 at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City, the state Department of Corrections said.

A cause and manner of death were not disclosed.

The department said Battenfield entered prison in May 1981 after he was convicted of first-degree murder in Nye County.

The Reno Gazette Journal in April 1980 identified Battenfield, then 45, as a ranch hand sought as the suspect in the deaths of two men whose bodies were found near Tonopah. Both had been shot in the head. Neither victim was identified in the newspaper report.
