Herd softball begins campaign with victory; tennis falls to Louisville
SAN DIEGO — Marshall University opened its softball season Friday with a 5-2 victory over UC Riverside at the University of San Diego Tournament.
Abigail Tolbert pitched a complete-game seven-hitter.
Second baseman Armani Brown was 3 for 4 and drove in one run. Third baseman Blakely Burch and left fielder Rachel Rousseau both had two hits. Rousseau also knocked in two runs.
Marshall played host San Diego in a later game.
Tournament games Saturday are 2:30 p.m. against Cal Poly and 10 p.m. against Cal Riverside.
BARBOURSVILLE — The University of Louisville recorded a 5-2 women’s tennis victory Friday against Marshall inside the Huntington Tennis Club.
Louisville (8-0) picked up the doubles point with two wins in three matches and won four singles matches.
Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych won in singles for Marshall (2-4). Smith defeated Raven Neely (7-5, 6-2) and Dankanych beat Sena Suswam (6-2, 6-4).
Marshall plays away from home Sunday at Virginia Tech. First serve in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center is 4 p.m.
