Witness Tree monument unveiled in Darien
DARIEN — The Darien Police Department unveiled a monument Wednesday identifying the Witness Tree at Spring Grove Cemetery.
The original Honey Locust Witness Tree, which marked the approximate spot where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous 1863 Gettysburg Address, stands in Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pa.
In an effort to preserve the tree’s history after it was severely damaged by lightning in a 2008 storm, the Historic Gettysburg-Adams County collected its seeds to sell saplings, one of which was planted in Darien several years ago.
The monument was purchased by the Darien Police Association and was installed with the assistance of Don Foley, owner of Fairfield Monument Company, Spring Grove superintendent Joseph Fiori and Nielsen’s Property Services Manager, Paul White, according to the Darien Police Department.
