Sammy Davis Jr. Bows Out of Tournament
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Sammy Davis Jr., the ″Candy Man″ who helped sweeten the pot for the Greater Hartford Open golf tournament, will end his involvement, the Greater Hartford Jaycees said.
Davis, associated with the PGA tour event since 1974, doesn’t have time to continue after July, the Jaycees said Wednesday.
Davis will be honored during the tournament week, July 18-24, said Rose Swiatkiewicz, tournament chairwoman.
″Everyone is aware of Sammy’s tremendous contribution to the tournament and we want to do some special things to mark the occasion of his 15th anniversary,″ she said.
When Davis joined the tournament, its purse was $200,000. His presence, and that of Canon Camera Inc., since 1985, has helped increase the purse to $700,000.
Davis also helped get national televion coverage every year since 1974 and has brought such celebrities as former President Gerald Ford, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason and Liza Minnelli as guests the past few years.
