Tempe police officers hurt in wrong-way crash in Phoenix

November 4, 2019

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say an early morning crash on a Phoenix freeway involving Tempe police was caused by a wrong-way driver.

Police say a sergeant and an officer suffered minor and non-life-threatening injuries in the collision on State Route 51 that occurred about 1:45 a.m. Monday.

They say suspect driver — a 27-year-old Ohio man — was hospitalized for serious injuries. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Authorities say impairment is a factor in the crash that’s being investigated.

They say the two officers were driving separately to investigate a missing person case and weren’t using their emergency lights or sirens at the time.

Police say the sergeant’s vehicle collided with the car near the Indian School Road exit.

The collision also impacted the other officer’s vehicle.
