Redskins to host Jamaal Charles, Orleans Darkwa for workout
Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa will be among the running backs to visit the Redskins on Sunday for a workout, according to ESPN.
Coach Jay Gruden said Saturday there was a “strong possibility” the Redskins would sign another back after the team had only three players Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Kapri Bibbs healthy at the position.
Charles, 31, was once a star in the NFL, but his productivity has declined in recent years. Last season with the Denver Broncos, Charles rushed for 296 yards on 69 carries for one touchdown.
If Charles is signed, he would be reunited with quarterback Alex Smith. The two spent four seasons together in Kansas City.
Darkwa, meanwhile, led the New York Giants in rushing in 2017. The 26-year-old ran for 751 yards, 154 of which came against the Redskins in Week 17.
The Redskins have had four running backs become injured this preseason. Three of them Samaje Perine, Byron Marshall and Martez Carter were hurt Thursday against the Jets, while rookie Derrius Guice suffered a season-ending torn ACL against the New England Patriots.
Washington waived Carter (leg) on Saturday. Perine is nursing an ankle injury and Marshall has a lower leg injury. Gruden did not say if the players would be ready for Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
