83-year-old West Virginia student is commencement speaker
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — An 83-year-old student of West Virginia University at Parkersburg will deliver the school’s commencement address this week.
The university said in a news release that Sharon O’Neill of Parkersburg is the eldest community and technical college graduate since the West Virginia Community and Technical College System began in 2004.
O’Neill will complete a regents bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in history and is among 265 expected to graduate at the school this semester.
O’Neill said in the release that attending WVU Parkersburg was at the top of her bucket list.
She worked as a Wood County Board of Education secretary and retired with 34 years of employment from the Bureau of Fiscal Service.
The school’s commencement ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
