Porter ties for SEC’s top preseason player; MU picked to finish fifth

October 19, 2017

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Through double doors and up two escalators inside the Omni Hotel Nashville on Wednesday, papers stacked on a table signaled the Southeastern Conference’s preseason selections.

Michael Porter Jr.’s name covered them.

The freshman was picked in a tie for preseason player of the year with Georgia senior forward Yante Maten and Texas A&M senior forward Robert Williams.

Porter Jr. was also selected to the All-SEC first team.

“There’s a lot of expectations for me, but I kind of welcome that,” Porter Jr. said. “Nobody has higher expectations (for me) than I have for myself.”

Missouri’s team, on the other hand, was selected to finish fifth in the conference behind Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida and Kentucky.

The Wildcats were picked as the favorite for the 13th time since the 1998-99 season.
