Mystery Solved? DNA shows animals are coyotes, not wolves
INDUSTRY, Ill. (AP) — DNA testing shows that wolf-like animals filmed by a western Illinois man’s trail camera are apparently coyotes, not wolves.
Doug Dufford is an Illinois Department of Natural Resources invasive wildlife manager. He tells the Chicago Tribune that preliminary test results on carcasses the man submitted shows, “we’re basically talking about coyotes here.”
Farmer Jay Smith has captured video of the animals for several years on property he manages near the McDonough County village of Industry, about 235 miles (380 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
He submitted the carcasses to the Field Museum in Chicago for testing. Despite the DNA test results, he remains convinced they’re wolves.
Although Dufford says there was “some indication of ancient wolf” in the animals’ DNA, he says virtually all coyotes have small amounts of wolf DNA.
