Pregame: Hessler optioned; Cosart added

July 30, 2016 GMT

A day after acquiring right-hander Jarred Cosart from the Marlins in the Andrew Cashner trade, the 26-year-old former top prospect was added to the Padres roster on Saturday. To make room, the Padres optioned left-hander Keith Hessler back to Triple-A El Paso.

The 27-year-old Hessler has allowed seven earned runs in five innings with the Padres, although he worked two scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Friday’s loss.

In the Pacific Coast League – Hessler is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA, 33 strikeouts and a 1.21 WHIP in 27 1/3 innings.

Cosart is scheduled to start Monday for the Padres after throwing a bullpen today. He had not arrived by batting practice, but Padres manager Andy Green laid out the hope for the latest pitcher added to the rotation.

Cosart is 0-1 with a 5.95 ERA, 11 strikeouts and a 1.78 WHIP in 19 2/3 innings for the Marlins. He turned in his best season as a rookie with the Astros, going 1-1 with a 1.95 ERA, 33 strikeouts and a 1.35 WHIP in 60 innings in 2013.

“A lot of people out there in the industry said he was going to be an ace, a top-of-the-rotation type arm,” Green said. “It hasn’t materialized that way, but you only have to look across baseball to see guys that end up realizing full potentials in other organizations, whether it’s another pitching coach that impacts them, whether it’s a change of scenery or maturity in general.

“I think the hope for us for him is he realizes the potential he does have. He has great stuff. He’s got a live arm. He’s got an outstanding curveball. It’s a matter of putting it all together and running with it.”

Game 2: 5:40 p.m. Saturday

Reds RHP Anthony DeSclafani (6-0, 3.09 ERA)

Among the 26-year-old’s victories is an eight-inning gem that prevented the Padres from sweeping the Reds in Cincinnati last month. He allowed five runs in five innings to the Giants in his last start.

Padres LHP Christian Friedrich (4-6, 5.00 ERA)

Over his last seven starts, opposing hitters have a .922 OPS against Friedrich. He is 2-5 with a 7.86 ERA, 26 strikeouts and 15 walks over those 34 1/3 innings.
