Couple Killed In Carriage Crash
INTERCOURSE, Pa. (AP) _ An Amish couple were killed Monday when their horse-drawn carriage collided with a tractor-trailer and was dragged over 100 feet along a rural road in Lancaster County, state police said.
Melvin Beiler, 55, and Katie Beiler, 52, of Gordonville, Lancaster County, were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Lancaster County Coroner Vincent Walsh.
The couple were riding in their horse-drawn carriage when a tractor trailer driven by Ronald Yoder, 32, attempted to pass them, said state police dispatcher Sandra Sweigart.
Beiler apparently did not see the truck enter the passing lane and turned left, hitting the front of the truck, Ms. Sweigart said.
The carriage became pinned underneath the tractor trailer, which dragged it for 109 feet before coming to a stop, Ms. Sweigart said.
No charges have been filed, Ms. Sweigart said. The truck driver was not injured, she said.
Ms. Sweigart said the horse apparently fled before police arrived.
