MOUNT VERNON — A fire caused $52,500 worth of damage to a residence Saturday in the 900 block of South 38th Place.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched to the home around noon and extinguished the fire in the garage area, with one vehicle involved, according to a City of Mount Vernon news release. No one was injured, and a dog was removed from the residence.

A minimal amount of damage occurred to the rest of the home because the sole occupant closed the door from the garage into the home after determining the fire was beyond the capabilities of a household fire extinguisher, the release stated.

The Big Lake, Burlington, Cedardale/Conway, and McLean Road fire departments assisted in controlling the fire. An investigation by the Burlington fire marshal determined the cause to be accidental.
